I heard somewhere that it was made by the Simpsons creators, but I don't know for sure.

I doubt that, it was made in Europe, I also am pretty sure this is a dupe, but I am not digging for the link

Ha!  That was great!

Love the little touches they paid attention to like Mr. Burns checking his watch when the whistle blew.

The simpson is actually based on the area I live, or so I've heard from a guy who works with me who is a hardcore cartoon geek.

When Marge and Maggie are shown, the steering wheel is shown on the "English side".
When Homer gets out of the car in the driveway the steering wheel is on the "American side"

Supposedly this is the opening into for British Premier of the new season.  At least that is what the trivia geek I work with told me.

My guess is they did that to keep the angles and general look right

It's been established that Springfield is in Kentucky, but where Springfield is located has always been a running joke for the entire series.  It's not possible for one city to have all the things Springfield supposedly has in or near it like an oceanfront, mountains, large amounts of snowfall, a Daniel-Boone-like founder etc.

Now where Matt Groening is from and where he was inspired for his characters and the "look" of Springfield is another matter, and I have no idea on that one.

The Simpsons was based on the Oregon area where Matt Goening grew up.

That's what I heard years ago.  We also have a Springfield here...

ETA:  We also have mountains, forests, desert, beaches, hippies, right-wingers, a nearby active volcano, rivers, and about every other geological feature somewhere in the state...

There is a fine portrait of Bart in the sidewalk down by PGE Park in Portland, where Groening is from.

Makes sense that it would be Oregon.

Also, anyone care to guess Matt Groening's father/mother/sister's name is?

Yes, it's Portland. Terwilliger (as in Sideshow Bob) is a street here, as is Flanders (the neighbor), Quimby (the mayor), and Lovejoy (the reverend). But there are other Oregon references, too (Springfield is a town near Eugene, Springfield Gorge = Columbia Gorge, etc.).

ETA: Oh, and I think the nuclear plant Homer works at is probably modeled after Trojan, a nearby plant that was thoroughly mismanaged (now defunct).

You're half right. The Brits made it, but it'll appear in the U.S. (which means everywhere else)

NEW YORK - Ever wonder what Bart Simpson would look like in human form?

"The Simpsons" is about to show you. The long-running Fox animated series will unveil a live-action opening sequence Sunday (8 p.m. EST), a Fox spokeswoman said Thursday.

In it, the dysfunctional cartoon family — Bart, Homer, Marge, Lisa and Maggie — will be seen as they would appear in real life, played by lookalike actors.

"I'm just amazed there are people who want to be known for looking like the Simpsons," said Al Jean, the show's executive producer, in a statement.

A team from British network Sky One created and commissioned the live sequence, which apes the series' memorable opening shots: Bart writing on a chalkboard, Homer pulling a nuclear rod out of his shirt, and Maggie and Marge at the supermarket.

"The Simpsons" was recently renewed for two more seasons, its 18th and 19th.
