The stars and planets aligned in the IRS tax code or something and I am getting more back on my tax return than I actually paid in due to the Child Tax Credit. My mom is an accountant and has always done my taxes, she explained how it all works, seems right from what I have read about it also. I had a bunch of change this last year with getting custody of my son and leaving active duty so it pretty much worked out to the .gov paying me for last year.

It worked out to getting about $400 more back than I had withheld last year, total of over 2k. I feel like a welfare recipient or something though, not really happy about it but I'll take it.

The Child Tax Credit is very good for those who have kids its uncle sam's way of saying hey I know it's expensive to raise a kid so every year you have that child live with you, you can get extra money back from uncle sam.

Huh?  You don't pay anything in, get free money back from the gov (um, from me and my wife), then complain you're getting screwed?  Sounds like I'm getting screwed from you, rather than the other way around.

Better go back to your math class.  A course in logic and economics wouldn't hurt, either.

Glad it worked for you too.

OK, sorry, Specop_007.  I mixed your reply up with the original poster ( a few too many beers tonight, I suppose).  I use every legitimate tax deduction available as well.

I'm a CPA, and see all kinds of people getting free money from the government because they have kids.  Damn, I don't remember anybody emailing me and asking me to support their child....but as m wife and I have not had any children, we pay through the nose when it comes to federal income tax.  I'm sure a lot of our tax money goes towards these "refundable credits".

I pay far more than should be required in property taxes "for the children", and those taxes end up being mostly wasted on future illiterate children that have been schooled to be democrats.  Having my tax monies sent to people just because they made the decision to have children that they couldn't afford really pisses me off.

OK, rant off.  Anybody that wants the EIC, please email me and ask my permission before having children.

I hate to sound like the asshole in this thread, but if you got MORE back in taxes than you paid in, then you are officialy on welfare, and participating in socialist wealth re-distibution.

If you like the money, spend it in good faith - but don't you EVER dare to critisize welfare or socialism, because you have partaken of it.

I consider it welfare when someone applies for and receives, on a continuing basis, money or services. Getting back income tax is hardly welfare. It is just part of the tax code. What about all the people, and many on these boards I bet, that donate their old junk to charities. A lot of it isn't worth a dime and yet they claim current retail on the donation to get back more money on their return. I suppose that is welfare also? I say, more power to them. If the government doesn't like it, let them change the code. But for the people getting bigger returns than me or getting back more than they paid in because they have children, good for them.

I use the 1040EZ and don't claim anything and just get the standard deduction. Since I do not have kids are pay enough interest in my house note, I don't qualify for itemized deductions. I guess anyone that is able to claim something that I don't qualify for is getting income tax welfare.

I'm gonna say the folks claiming this is some socialist tendancy in you are talking out their ass.  Look what are your options here?  Did you lobby for the child tax credit?  Have you writen letters urging it's passage?  No.  Then file your taxes and take what they give you back.  What do you think you should do?  Mail them a check and say "please use this wisely"?  Without the proper form I'm sure it will be returned to you.  Should not claim your child or falsify other aspects of your return to insure you you pay more?

Bull.

This is the framework the elected representatives of the people have put in place.  Unless you are signing petitions to keep it in place then you can take the money AND feel free to complain about socialism.

It would be silly to suggest that an individual should not pay as little as possible within the law, however I personally think there should be no child tax credit, if you CHOOSE to have kids then you should not be paying less taxes than anyone else for that choice, it can be inverted and be called a "non-child tax penalty" for those without children. I also believe the interest paid on home loans should not be tax deductable, if you can afford to buy a house you get to pay less taxes than someone who rents, I just don't get it. And for the record, I own a home and have a child and still think it's wrong.

First of all I thank Specop_007 for the support and agree/understand where he is coming from but I have to be honest that I have "used" the system before this so DK is right to some extent that I really can't and won't criticize it that much in my lifetime.

Back in the mid 90's when my girlfriend at the time (future ex-wife) was pregnant the state of Florida paid every single one of her and then my kid's medical bills. I was 18 years old, a month out of high school and no job. Felt very guilty about it actually but it seemed like the best and only viable option economically at the time. Hell everyone else in my family thought it was the best thing ever, they all said it was like their tax dollars over the years were coming back to our family in a way. Hell in the past ten years everytime I bought a vehicle or anything for that matter and paid state sales tax (we don't have a state income tax) I have felt like I was repaying that "debt" in a way.

I still think from personal experience that if you don't utilize a system that your relatives and eventually yourself funds on some level you are missing out in a way. I have grown up after the experience above and it doesn't really feel great to receive a handout but it was good at the time that it was there to help my situation.

That was the idea in my original post. It doesn't feel right that I get more money back than I actually put in. It really doesn't make any sense. Of course you have to take into account that they pass legislation such as this to pander to a specific voting block, people with kids.
