What are the RAS numbers for on flat top uppers? Are they really important? Im thinking about building a flat top M-4 type upper and wonder if I need the RAs numbers. I have no idea what they are for. Thanks in advance.

They are there to help index certain optics or accessories.

In some armories, the optics are removed and the carry handle replaced on the M4 when it is returned to the rack. The numbers help the user identify where to place the lugs in the cross slots when reinstalling their TA01-NSN's, M68 Aimpoints, etc.

I thought it had something to do with that. We didnt ever take of our carrying handles when I used the M-4 on active duty so i never saw these before. We had just received the M-4's about a year before I left active duty and I didnt get a chance to play with them much. Thanks
