Get an M1A, but get an older one. The newer ones seem to be a lot more "hit-or-miss" than they used to be. The one I had ran fine, but a friend of mine's went 2 rds out of the box, and had to be sent back to SA. IIRC, it has something to do with SA having run out of USGI parts to use in the new ones.

I have heard good things about Fulton Armory's M14 clones. You might consider looking into them if you want.
