Agreed. He was in the USMC band and he enlisted at age 13 after we wanted to join the circus. <------------ currently in a "history of American music" class. |

"Leader of the Band/Principal Musician" by Act of Congress was the title for the conductor of the Marine Band.

Yes, he was a Marine. Here is a little trivia for you guys. Marines who pass the auditon for the DC band do not have to go to basic. Army folks who make the DC band get instant E6. Not too shabby eh?

What was his rank? He wasn't Leader of the Marine Corps Band at 13. Was he always a musician? Or was even John Philip Sousa a rifleman in Gunny's beloved Corps?

John Phillip Sousa was never an enlisted Marine in the sense of being a Marine rifleman.
In that era, the Marine Corps Band musicians were employees of the Marine Corps rather than "Marines", just like the mechanics and artificers at the arsenals (i.e., Springfield Armory), military store keepers, etc. Sousa was the period equivalent of a GS employee. |

The Marine Corps musicians that are enlisted as E-6s and skip boot camp have a unique uniform feature that denotes the fact that they are quasi-Marines at best: In the center of their chevrons, where a Marine would wear crossed infantry rifles. a hired on musician wears a musical scale |

Sousa was the 17th director of the band. When he was a child, his father was a musician in the band. He wanted to play violin in a circus band, but his father said it was a no-go, and enlisted him in the band.
Members of the "President's Own" are indeed Marines with the MOS of 9811 (the only 0311's are the stage crew..or anyone that wins an audition that was previously in a USMC "base band") and take four year enlistments, are subject to the UCMJ (nothing "quasi" about that), etc, but they do not go through basic training (if they are good enough to get into the band, they are considered as highly trained as they need to be...and basic can be detrimental to their skills). For "Pershing's Own", you go in as an E-4. After basic, you stay at E-4 for a probationary two month period, and then are bumped to E-6. |
