Alot of you love say that you love Ronald Reagan, but then you criticize and rail against everything that Ronald Reagan's presidency produced:

1. Ronald Reagan was a gun grabber who singed the horrible 1986 FOPA and banned new machine guns from the civilian market.

2. Ronald Reagan was an economic protectionist who impletmented tariffs and import restritions/quotas on automobiles, motorcycles, sugar, textiles, steel and electronics.

3. Ronald Reagan was staunchly anti-abortion and actively sought ways to have Roe vs. Wade overturned.

4. Ronald Reagan was opposed to pornography and used the justice department to crack down on the porn industry.

Personally, I love Ronald Reagan. I think we could use another Ronald Reagan now. George W. Bush sure as hell isn't Ronald Reagan and neither was George HW Bush. I'm thankful for all that Reagan did to strengthen our military, strengthen our economy, strengthen our national character and win the war against communism. I wish more Americans believed what Ronald Reagan and I believe!

I like him because he was a principled man. He also realized that in order to get your adgenda advanced you had to compromise. the FOPA is a prime example. It got rid of more bad than it added. Yes the MG ban sux but the rest of the bill is a boon for gun owners.
As a principaled man he stood up for and would not compromise on HIS core beliefs. These were in part defeating communism, reducing taxes, etc. We need more just like him.

Paging all those who were able to buy guns before 1986.
You have never read much about the Gun Control Act of 1968, have you?
The Firearms Owners Protection Act SAVED us.
I was only 1 year old when it was signed, but my grandfather told me what it was like to be a gunowner in that 20 year interim.
It was not fun.

I am a great supporter of the 1986 FOPA. I am aware of the abuses that took place prior to the 1986 FOPA and while I think that the MG ban amendment was an attrocity I do not think that Reagan should have vetoed the 1986 FOPA and thereby throw the baby out with the bath water.

A quick search of the active topics on this board shows that many arfcommers disagree:

"Mr. Gorbachev tear down this wall."

After that phrase was repeatably taken out of his speech by his staff (7 or 8 drafts without it in there I believe, all rejected)Reagan put it back in each time. He was man enough to call the 'evil empire' what it was.

You wont see men like that in politics that don't play the PC game.

My grandfather on my dads side was a campaign manager for Reagan during his California Governor runs.  My grandfather was heavily involved in the Republican party in California back then.  He knew Reagan personally and, from what I understand, my grandfather died when I was about 8, was extremely fond of the man.  I know Reagan liked him too.  For my Grandparents 50th wedding aniversary Reagan sent them a framed typed letter, signed by him, congratulating them on 50 years.  Something that is pretty rare and I look forward to hanging on the wall one day.

Skip a few years down the road while my grandfather was dying in the hospital, this was during Reagans winning run for the Presidency.  He had cancer just about everywhere from what I am told, had parts amputated, and could barely see I am sure.  He, clearly was not very coherent.  His nurse had on the news that was anouncing the developments of the race and when the anouncement that Reagan won, my grandfather was able to speak, something that had not occured for a while, "He did it".   He then promptly passed.

My dad tells me the nurse swears up and down this is the Gods honest truth.  And I don't doubt it for a second.

Other than that, all that needs be said.  Reagan was a good man, one of the best.

I'm not 100% on my source, but someone else can confirm - I think it's in Peggy Noonan's book.

Reagan LOVED TO SHOOT especially .22 plinking on his ranch.

Reagan GAVE GUNS AS GIFTS to foreign leaders (many pics of this if you search).

Finally, and best of all, PRESIDENT REAGAN OWNED AN AR-15.  I think it was an SP1.  Really.

Edit:  Plus I'm old enough to remember his three immediate predecessors. I remember $800/oz gold, double digit inflation, the Iran hostage crisis, and the sense that the nation was going down the tubes under Carter.   I remember gas lines and gas RATIONING (odd/even license plates to buy on different days).

How can you not love a President who owned an AR-15?

Wasnt Reagan one of the Presidents that came on board for reinstating the Assault Weapons ban? If I remember correctly, it was he, Carter, Ford, Bush Sr. who all stated they were for the ban being voted back in..........although I would imagine that Alzheimers at that time played havoc with his reasoning

I don't think he was for reinstating it.  I think he was too under the grip of alzheimers then.

My understanding is that when Jim Brady was injured, Reagan felt very bad for him and said if there was anythinig he could do for him...  Enter Sarah Brady with her request for support of the AWB.  Reagan, one to keep a promise, did this, even though he did not wish to.

This is my understanding - I could be wrong.

Cyclone:  Reagan announced his Alzheimers in 1994, prior to the imposition of the AWB, and made no public statements after this.  He died in June 2004.  So no, he wasn't.

Jim Brady (Sarah Brady's husband) was his press secretary, but Reagan steadfastly refused to sign gun control legislation. Although the 1986 law that ended FA manufacture was on his watch, it also allowed the re-import of M1 Garands, etc. as well as provided other protections for gun owners.

The Steyr Maadi AK's and AUGs, among other firearms, were imported while he was president.

"....President Reagan, the owner of an AR-15, was a strong and consistent supporter of the Second Amendment and the NRA. He was a long time member, joining NRA in December of 1972 and upgrading to Life Member in August of 1979. He actively courted the NRA`s endorsement in both of his presidential campaigns, and was the first presidential candidate in history to receive that endorsement. He appeared on the cover of NRA magazines four times. In 1983 he was offered, and accepted, an NRA Honorary Life Membership, the highest honor bestowed by the NRA.

He was the first, and to date, only, sitting president to speak at our Annual Meetings, and his remarks clearly illustrated his core support of the Second Amendment. Reagan told the cheering crowd that: "The NRA believes America"s laws were made to be obeyed and that our constitutional liberties are just as important today as 200 years ago. And by the way, the Constitution does not say Government shall decree the right to keep and bear arms. The Constitution says `the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.`"

Reagan felt at home before the assembled membership, saying "I`ve always felt a special bond with members of your group. You live by Lincoln`s words, `Important principles may and must be inflexible.` Your philosophy puts trust in people. . . . Good organizations don`t just happen. They take root in a body of shared beliefs. They flow from strong leadership, with vision, initiative and determination to reach great goals."

President Reagan shared our pursuit of great goals through the 1980s--the rollback of the most onerous provisions of the Gun Control Act of 1968. And in 1986, President Reagan proudly signed the landmark Firearms Owners` Protection Act (FOPA) into law.

Sadly, some gun-ban advocates have callously exploited Reagan`s passing to misrepresent his positions, staging scripted interviews with the most biased of national media outlets to insist that he supported their anti-gun agenda and even claiming that he never held an NRA membership. I can feel only sadness at these crass and desperate lies. They merit no response; the historical record is clear and amply documented.

I will share with you, however, one additional anecdote that sheds light on Reagan`s core belief in our rights and freedoms. Little noted until his ascendance to the Presidency, the story takes place on an autumn evening in 1933, in Des Moines, Iowa.

Melba King was a 22-year old nursing student, and was walking home one evening when she was approached by a mugger with a gun who demanded her money. Reagan, then working as a local radio sportscaster, espied the confrontation from his second-story rented room. Leaning out the window with a .45 caliber revolver, Reagan sternly directed the mugger to "leave her alone or I`ll shoot you right between the shoulders." The mugger ran off, and Reagan calmed the woman, escorting her home safely.

Melba King did not encounter Reagan again until 1984, at an Iowa political rally. Iowa governor Terry Branstad knew of the incident and invited King to the event to surprise Reagan. After King and Reagan hugged on stage, Reagan laughed and told the crowd, "This is the first time I`ve had a chance to tell you the gun was empty. I didn`t have any cartridges. If he hadn`t run when I told him to, I was going to have to throw it at him.""

Regan was a Man. Just about every other recent president is a spineless weenie by comparison. He had to deal with a far more powerful Left wing (Congress, the press, etc) then either Bush, and still managed to stuff through more Conservative legislation then any other Republican President.

Most important of all, he stood up to the Soviet Union, and wiped them off the face of the Earth without a single shot being fired in anger. The Soviet Union is the only enemy we've ever had that was truly capable of destroying us. Yeah, these terrorists are nasty bastards, but even at their height, they could never destroy us. The Soviets could, and we lived in fear of that World War for decades.

Your post adds nothing to the political or religous debate, and serves no good purpose. Therefore, you should be banned, arrested, and thrown in prison.

I'm not trying to call you out here, just make a point. If you declare that some particular type of speech has "no purpose" and therefore can be banned, you start down a very dangerous slippery slope. Who will be in power next, and what kind of speech will they declare to have " no purpose"? Can you say Hillary?

There's a damm good reason why the First Amendment protects all speech, not just the kinds that you or I like. There's a reason why the founders said (I don't remember which one) "Though I do not agree with a word you say, I will defend to the death your right to say it." There's another one that says something to the effect of that if you do not protect the rights of your enemies, you establish a precedent that will eventually reach back to you.

I think over all Reagan should be remembered for the pride he brought back to America.  We went from a sniveling weakling to the most powerful, most respected nation in the world.  We who lived through both times [pre, during and post] Reagan remember the sacrifices we had to endure:  High unemployment, low wages, inflation but it was all worth it when those patriot rockets went off in Iraq and when the Berlin Wall came down or when jets bombed Libya [my husband was working in Libya when this happened and claims Reagan cost him the best paying job of his life but he would vote for him tomorrow].

We could really use another Ronald Reagan.  Like or dislike the two President Bushes [sp?] they do have respect for our military and our troops and that's a far cry better then Clinton.
