It depends, but if you keep your nose clean you can probably count on E-4 within 2 years.

I would have picked up Sgt (E5) if I hadnt been medically discharged (just a hair over 3 years). I would have had a good enough score to pick up if I had been around for a couple more months. Works a little bit different in the Marine Corps than it does in the Army/National Guard I am sure.

it does depend. There is a minimum time in as that rank as well.
E-4 was like 1 year, e-5 was 2 years I think. also depends on how well you do in your test, and how many they need at the next rank. For instance. In the Navy, as a nuke, everyone got e-4 coming out of a-school. That automatically extended you for 1 year. A few people didn't take it, and had a hard time making it to e-4 because no matter how well they did on the test, there were only a few solts open for e-4. e-5 wasn't that bad. Basically if you passed the test, you could get it. Problem was that the test had nothing to do with my job, and it took me 2 years to score high enough to get it. e-6 was a gimmie too since hardly anyone stayed in that long. People that bust butt, could make e-7 in 7 years. |

Do you have any college? If you have a full degree, you get to kick off as an E-4. That said, promotion to E-5 will still be a while, since not only do you have to have time in grade, you also need to have time in service.

If your good figure E-4 by the end of four years, and E-5 thru E-8 over the next ten, then Staff or Warrant Officer for the next six. Then go fishing for a year or two.
Cpl Russell E-4 3 1/2 years. 10% Diss in Right knee. Govt buys the beer for the rest of my life. |

In the USN if you start at E1 (and not everyone does) 6 months to E2, 9 months to E3, 9 months later eligible to take the test for advancement to E4. Advancement above E3 is dependent on awards, test scores, and billet vacancies.
For officers: 2 years to O2, 2 years to O3. For line officers O4 is normally near the 10 year mark and O5 at around 15. Historical officer promotion rates (and goals) are 99% to O2, 97% to O3, 75% to O4, 75% to O5 so about 54% of those who stay in will become O5s. This is highly dependent on community though. |

The National Guard is much more forgiving about disqualifying problems. We even bring in the occaisional RE-4 |

Made E-5 somewhere between 1.5 and 2 years in the early 70s.
Why? Because I had skills far above the average GI of the time. I could tie my own shoes, read, write and even add numbers. OTOH, I doubt I'd be a pimple on a PFC's ass in this day and age. |

In the AF, you must normally serve 36 months Time In Service, with the exception of SrA below the zone, which makes you eligible six months earlier. I could not imagine making E-5 in two years; having little time to learn followership, how can one be an effective leader? The AF pretty much gave away E-5 about five years ago, many learned they had no idea how to lead and supervise others. The AF has a better standard of living and retention rates at the cost of slower promotions, IMHO. B_S |

Depends which branch you go into. In the USAF, about 3 yrs to E4 and takes an average of 6.5 yrs to E5.

Made my E7 just before going over for DS/DS. Made it in 9 yrs. There was a freeze on promotable E4's when I was at Ft. Bragg around '84 I believe it was.

Tanam, it also depends upon your MOS.
Say in your reserve unit (I'm gonna say it's a M*A*S*H* because that's what I know from experience) and you are an E-1 in the 91P MOS. You know that all units have a structure based on the job. For 91P, in my unit, it was 1 E-7, 1 E-6, 3 E-5, 4 E-4's and many E-1 - E-3's. That means, for me, that although I had the time, and the requirements under my belt, I had to wait 5 years for my E-5.  Check the rank structure guides for the MOS you're interested in and see which slots are filled and how long it will be before the slots open up. Our E-7 had 8 years left until retirement and was in it for the long haul. If you see all the top slots are filled with no chance for opening within reasonable amount of time, pick a new MOS. |

I joined the USCG in '99, they were hurting for recruits(most branches were at that time) and I picked a wide open rate on top of that. I went from E-1 to E-5 in 23 months then stayed an E-5 for the next four years. In the reserves now, advancement has slowed down somewhat these days. |

if you suck air and don't suck at much else, you'll make E4 without too much of a sweat within 3-4 years tops. After that is a bit of a quality cut to make E5. You'll spend another 3-5 years as an E5, then move up from there based on performance/test scores/ect.

If your really high speed, get your shit down good, and happen to be in the right place at the right time, you can make E-5 very quickly, especially in the Guard. I met a guy at Fort Bliss who was NG, an E-5 and only 19 yrs old. He enlisted as an E-3 at 17 though, and I believe after getting his full bird private, he had to get a waiver for Time in Service/Time in Grade. It is possible though. Just depends on how hard your willing to work for it.
