DETROIT - A 12-year-old visitor to the Detroit Institute of Arts stuck a wad of gum to a $1.5 million painting, leaving a stain the size of a quarter, officials say.

The boy was part of a school group from Holly that visited the museum on Friday, officials say. They say he took a piece of Wrigley's Extra Polar Ice gum out of his mouth and stuck it on Helen Frankenthaler's "The Bay," an abstract painting from 1963.

The museum acquired the work in 1965 and says it is worth about $1.5 million.

The gum stuck to the painting's lower left corner and did not adhere to the fiber of the canvas, officials told the Detroit Free Press. But it left a chemical residue about the size of a quarter, said Becky Hart, assistant curator of contemporary art.

The museum's conservation department is researching the chemicals in the gum to decide which solvent to use to clean it. The museum hopes to make the repair in two weeks and will keep "The Bay" on display in the meantime, she said.

"Our expectation is that the painting is going to be fine," Hart said.

Holly Academy director Julie Kildee said the boy had been suspended from the charter school and says his parents also have disciplined him.

"Even though we give very strict guidelines on proper behavior and we hold students to high standards, he is only 12 and I don't think he understood the ramifications of what he did before it happened, but he certainly understands the severity of it now," said Kildee.

I will gladly admit that the majority of the postmodernist movement is garbage. However, I believe surrealism to be one of the most profound movements in art, and cubism and dadaism were revolutionary and have produced some beautiful works (Guernica, anyone?).

Okay, the painting looks like a blotch. Yes. Simple combinations of color and shape can often times be more expressive than realism.

The kid did a bad thing. If it can be fixed, then send him a bill. If it can't, then send him a summons on a charge of vandalism. Make sure he knows goddamn well not to mess with stuff that isn't his. However, it's sad to say, even the Mona Lisa is falling apart, as Tyler Durden put it. Things don't last forever.

When I was in school we visitied the Huntington Museum and Library. I'm prettty sure that the rules were no gum anywhere even before getting on the bus, let alone on the bus, off the bus or in the tour.

WTF couldn't they do the same? We used to be able to survive without gum and cell-phones, why can't they?

I'ld sue the school, I'm sure the rules the Museum gave them wee NO GUM, and the school didn't stand up to the contract.

This isn't surrealism. "Melting Clocks" is funny,as is MC Escher. This is a blotch of abstract expressionism that only gives meaning to those with wild imaginations. I value art based on how the average man interprets it.
I think "Guernica" sucks too. I'm not a late Picasso fan.

Yes, simple colors,shape and contrast can be beautiful,but they can also be found anywhere,and can be created as easily by a 5 year old with watercolors,as by a 60 year old with acrylics. Ease of creation should also work into the appreciation of a painting. Any fool can toss paint like Jackson Pollack,but not every man can work like Frederic Remington.
