Unlucky timing. Sunday in Orange County was still warm. Some rain Monday afternoon and Tuesday morning. No more expected till late this week and it should be gone by the time they arrive.
Wild Animal Park and tram around the fields should be open even if raining.
You could easily spend a full day if not 2 in the museums in Balboa Park if the rain is there for a day or two.
It's really really unlikely you would get more than a day or two of rain.

And the beaches in North County can be pretty walking during stormy weather.
Maybe even head out to Anza-Borrego Desert State Park for wildflowers. If you're from Michigan the Anza-Borrego is wild place to visit. Weather out there is often good when cloudy on the coast
www.anzaborrego.statepark.org/wildflowers.htmlMay even see the Desert Bighorn sheep out there.
