The killer strain of H5N1 bird flu has been found in a dead cat, scientists have confirmed.

The announcement comes as Sweden joins the growing list of European countries with the virus and France faces a crisis with 30 countries slapping a total or partial ban on its poultry products.

The cat was found at the weekend on an island off Germany's northern coast.

The finding will increase concern that the virus could spread to other species in Europe as it has in other parts of the world.

A number of big cats in Asian zoos died after being fed with infected birds and domestic cats have been shown to be particularly vulnerable to the disease.

There have been no known case of a human becoming infected by a cat.

The United States has joined the list of countries refusing poultry imports from France by blocking shipments from the Ain region which confirmed infection last week.

None of the countries refusing French poultry is in the EU.

France's farming minister, Dominique Bussereau, said French diplomats are trying to get countries to reconsider their bans or allow in some poultry products.

France is the EU's biggest producer of poultry. The bans have affected 12 percent of its exports.

Sweden announced two dead wild birds found on the southeast coast had bird flu but would not confirm if they died from the H5N1 virus.

The World Organisation for Animal Health has warned the flu virus is "very likely to spread" to domestic poultry around Europe.

The importance of that statement is not where but how dense is the population.  If you have a crowded and dirty surroundings, diseases are going to take hold.
