I understand you have to move around and be able to do a wide variety of tasks in order to earn enough money to live on.
You don't get into aviation to get rich, that's for sure.

DF has got it right.  If you go to fly, pretty much the major carriers are out for a good 10-15 years or so.  I'm a mechanic at the airline in my name, however on 31 March I'm getting laid off and moving to IN to chase a job up there.

You might want to fly, MT, but you might also think about broadening your vision. I am in training to do the same job that Delta is in right now: Airframe and Powerplant Mechanic.
Times are tough and I sat on the idea for a few years. I know that there is alot more laying off than there is hiring taking place.
I then found out that A&P covers parts of 52 different jobs. You'd be hard pressed to find another job that draws on such a diverse range of skillsets. Even if I never get a job in aviation, I will have gained the knowledge required to start above the ground floor in another field, or spend a minimum of time at the ground floor.
I have also been told about flying mechanics. If you don't mind living out of a bag all the time, you can make some pretty good money.
I've also been told that you can trade wrench time for flight time.
You will be inside the industry, and alot closer to the information about job openings.
