I just aquired an HK91 in a trade. I was very happy to finally add a .308 "Battle rifle" to my collection. From everything I have been hearing this type of rifle is the "go to" weapon of choice if the SHTF. Well I have just one question for you all....
How the hell do you carry it around?!!  This gun definitely gives me a woody, I could just stare at it for hours  but unfortunately so far everything I've done with it (change stocks, add the claw mount for my scope) has been a wrestling match -and I'm not a small guy! I've already rented a crane for when i first clean it after some range time!  I can't imagine carrying this beast around for more than a block or two, let alone through the woods at a face pace. I gotta be honest, in a SHTF situation, I'm still grabbing my AR. Am I the only one who thinks this? |

In a riot situation, I would be prone on the roof with the FAL. If I have to be on the move, I'll have the AR carbine.

I want a .308 for bugging in. Might need range and penetration, especially if whoever I'm shooting at is in a vehicle, has body armor, or is behind light cover. On the move, I want a lighter gun with more ammo.

They get heavy, but it is hard to beat a .308. After a while you get used to it.

You need to start working out.
Do this first thing in the AM: 1) stretch, do it allot. You will need it. 2) do 200 push ups. You can work up to this but this is your goal. 3) do 150 crunches. Same as above, work up to it. 4) do 160 dip. SAA 5) do 100 pull ups. SAA 6) run 3 miles with a full pack. I am being easy on you here as most would be running at leat ten miles. Do all this for 6 months then go pick up that battle rifle. Feels light now don't it? Now load it all up with a full combat load and run that same 3 miles. Ain't light no more is it? Increase the exercise period to twice daily. |

The reason that the M855 came out was because of the lack of penetration of 308 at 300 meters. The steel core penetrator in the M855 will go through light armor at 300 yards, where as the 308 will not (so says FN, and the military went with it...) Also readhere That is why I have a bunch of M855 for the SHTF.... |

I use a HK91 for deer hunting. With a ARMS scope mount and scope and 10 or 12 rounds in the mag it gets a little heavy.
I carry it on a sling with the muzzle point down. Or if I am walking around I carry the gun with the muzzle point down and gripping the mag. If I was ever in a SHTF situation the first gun I would grab would be the HK91.

yep, my FAL is a little beefy. if i'm bugging in, that'll be on the bipod, mid-room, upper level, looking out the windows. if i gotta go, my AR is coming with me. |

Because the solders durning WWII were not the fat keyboard commandos/computer jocks that we have today (with there damn stress cards). They really worked back then and didnt bitch because thay had to hump a 80 lb+ ruck and a heavy rifle.. In short Better physical shape.. |

I have never held an HK91 but I can't imagine it being as heavy as a Garand. I use CQB slings on my AR10s. Weight and size are two reasons I dropped the 308 semi-auto platform a long time ago.
I'll never lug around a semi-auto 308 when there's an AR15 around....and in my world....there's ALWAYS an AR15 around! I'm not in a platoon or a squad. Since I'd have to do all the work myself, I want a 16" AR15, not a 308. I think the 308 semi-auto rifle is useless unless your gonna dig in somewhere and have someone else carry your loaded 20-round mags around for you. |

I also have to add my proven way to make your HK feel light weight.
Add HK A3 stock Add HK Claw mount Add Scope (your choice) Add HK steel bipod Add sling Load 20 rounds into HK Steel mag, insert mag into rifle Load another 20 rounds into a second HK mag Add HK steel mag clamp and second 20 round .308 mag to the HK91. Now you have a shoulder crushing HK rifle that will weigh 15 to 17 pounds. Learn to carry this heavy rig for 6 months. After 6 months remove all of the HK add ons, or buy another HK91. Now your standard 9.8 pound HK 91 A2 will feel as light as a AR15 HBAR, because you will be used to carrying aroung a rifle that wieghs as much as a light squad automatic.

Maybe the entire picture will reveal a 17 year-old longharied swedish boy? When I was in the army I was issued either a Garand or a HK G3 at different times. I honestly didn't think they were that heavy. When hoofing it around the countryside, with full gear, it didn't seem that bad - and I'm not sure the difference to an AR would even have been particularly noticable. I suppose a 20" AR is a little lighter, but the real difference to appreciate in the weight of the ammo you have to schelp around. Is an unloaded HK91 really that much heavier than an unloaded AR-15? How about with full mag - do 20 rounds of .308 really weigh signifacantly more than 30 rounds of .223? |

I'm not busting on you man..........
But, go to the gym. Work on your shoulders. The generations that carried those big ass weapons were just harder than ours. I'd have to do the same thing. Trust me. That's a heavy mo-fo. I did some training in riot control and, we had to hold the baton up next to our ears for, like 5 minutes, then, strike.....5 minutes...strike.... It was to show us how weak our shoulders were....It worked. Pump some iron...Make sure you go shoot that gun all the time.... Look...The Brits used that as a main weapon for a long time........... Tell me you're better than the euros!

But ironically, those WWII guys were lots smaller than we are now. I am betting about four inches less on average. Plus they had just gone through the Depression so they didn't eat as well as us. I use my scoped M1A hunting Elk at 10,000 feet, but I do use a assault sling instead of a normal one. I am tempted to use my H&K91 next year. |
