I always carry a ready to go handgun when I go to a public range. Never know when someone is a badguy at the range and might want to off you and take your stuff.

Definitely.

And if I’m shooting a rifle and go downrange I make sure I take the rifle, and a loaded magazine, with me. I definitely don’t leave my rifle and ammo out while I’m 100 yards away with my back turned.

Absolutely,

and I wouldn't leave my rifle alone 100 yards away, unless I had another rifle on my back.

Banger wannabees always show up and start shooting sideways, sweeping, etc.
Can't hurt to be prepared.

I always carry an extra shotgun, and rack it ever few minutes or so to scare away any unsavory characters.

I always have something loaded and ready to go, especially since out here in the desert you dont know who will show up...

Yup.  Always last to go downrange and first to get back to the line as well.

I keep one loaded mag with me at all times for the Glock.  If I am shooting pistol when the range goes cold, I load it and reholster.  After seeing the morons that frequent our public range, it is a necessity.

I try to stay away from public ranges specifically for the unsavory characters.  I'm a member of a semi-public range.  Meaning, only members can come to the range, but anybody can become a member if they've got the money.  If I ever am at a public range I always carry my .357 magnum downrange with me.  By the way, the sights are set for 100 yards, just in case.  And yes, I really can accurately engage targets at that distance with my magnum.  MJD

yep usually a pistol that I will keep ready and then a rifle with a loaded mag.

by public range do you mean public land and no fees?  the ranges i usually go to are privately owned, but open to everyone.  i usually go with at least 4 or 5 other people - in many cases a lot more - and a few of them usually have a CCW on them.  the range we usually go to has staff that looks out for that sort of thing as well.

Hmmm, the range I usually go too is state funded and there is always a game warden nearby, also I usually go with friends and the whole group never walks downrange at once.

Also everybody at the range usually walks downrange at the same time to look at their targets.

Never really thought of it but I guess next time I'll make sure to bring a weapon along with me, I rather reload as I walk anyways (always do that when theres no game warden around).

Platt and Maddix got lots of their equipment from public shooting areas. Enough said.

Ironically you are all refering to one another when you speak of unsavory kooks at the range!!

The outdoor range I frequent has separate pistol and rifle areas. You're not allowed to fire your rifle at the pistol range, no pistols at the rifle range, etc. But, whenever I'm at the rifle range, my SIG p228 is always loaded and on my hip, ready to go.

Always when I shot on BLM land in Colorado.  Out in the middle of nowhere.

That is the exact reason I started keeping a ready gun at the range on me.

Nope. It was the Miami deal that started me carrying at the range.

Glad to see I'm not the only who thinks this way.

That happens around here too.  I finally paid for membership to a private club, and it is worth every penny.  Most of the time I am the only one there.
