Dennis Weaver dies, 'Gunsmoke' sidekick, detective in 'McCloud'
BOB THOMAS
Associated Press

LOS ANGELES - Dennis Weaver, the gimpy, slow-witted deputy Chester Goode in the TV classic western "Gunsmoke" and the New Mexico deputy solving New York crime in "McCloud," has died, his publicist said Monday. The actor was 81.

The remainder of the story is here. . . . . .

I didn't remember the Gunsmoke series, but I can't see a Plymouth Scamp without thinking about Weaver's role in Duel.

I used to live just up the road from him.  His house was built out of recycled cans or tires or something.  Called it "sun" something.  Sunridge.  Had a sign hung over the driveway.

Duel was pretty cool. But there is NO WAY that semi could have kept up with that Valiant.

I was thinking that I had never heard of Duel, but if it's the semi vs. the red Plymouth Valiant movie, I remember seeing it as a kid.

It stood out because I liked cars and my dad had a 71 Plymouth Valiant (318 V8, 3-spd manual) at the time.  I think I remember noticing that they used multiple Valiants in the movie because they had different gas caps.

I met him 3 years ago when i was going to ASU , at Ben Avery rifle range , the range officer told me he was the guy from "Duel" , he seemed like a ok guy , i was watching him shoot a Colt Saa. and i did not know he was a liberal - from other members posts , i guess he was , too bad he died , as i did not think he was that old

I grew up watching Dennis Weaver as "Chester" on Gunsmoke, with James Arness as Matt Dillon and Amanda Blake as the solon owner Kitty.

Kitty was NOT a 'salon' owner -- It was a 'SALOON'!

That's where Sheriff Dillon and 'Doc' would get together for their daily dose of 'vitamins', which consisted of downing a few shots of Branchwater and enjoying the view of Kitty's red hair and beauty-mark.

Chester (Weaver) always managed to interrupt them by dragging his excited gimpy ass into the saloon over some trivial new plot development.

Though HE was the gimp, Chester never seemed to need any of the 'medicine' mentioned above.
