One of my favorite Presidents as far as the big picture but he really has managed to stick it to me a few times.
First, obviously the whole domestic machine gun thing. But at least it came as part of the FOPA 86 so it was a bad "good" thing. Then of course the whole Messe Commission / Moral Majority thing, but besides 7-11 no longer stocking Playboy it didn't really have an actual impact, 80s porn was pretty good and I never got into some of the extreme crap from the 70s anyway, not crazy about it in modern adult stuff either. But apparantly in the early 80s Ron passed or signed a law that prohibited the depiction of a nude adult in a film with a minor (where not talking child porn here, I don't wanna see that crap either, we are talking about a teen seeing an adult naked). I'm not exactly sure how "Birth" was made as it seems to violate the law where a young boy saw a naked Nicole Kidman and was in a bathtub with her. Anyway a fond childhood memory was recently released on DVD. The 25th Anniversary Edition of "Private Lessons" (1981). I remembered this film well from the early days of cable TV. Starring Sylvia Kristel and about a rich kid of about 15 who is seduced by his French maid. And boy did I want to be in that kids shoes as I was about the same age. So in order to take a nostalgic trip down softcore memory lane I grabbed this one. And in two scenes where Sylvia takes her underwear off a GREY SPOT appears on the screen.  Pretty sad that a movie I could watch on Showtime back in 1981 uneditted is not available to me as a grown adult on DVD in it's original form. While I was aware of pre code films (prior to 1934) that we censored I had no idea that a pre early 80s equivalent existed. Seems a few of the early 80s films are NOT available in their original form, mostly due to sexually explicit content. And that seems strange to me because the titles in question are extremely tame when compared to what you can STILL see on cable TV today. |

wally world usually cuts the scene, similar to how it's done for TV. I've never seen a block on a wally world movie, just a gap where i KNOW a good scene was supposed to be

I know Wal-Mart used to do that with VHS tapes, but I don't know if they still do that with DVDs.
They have so much selling power, they basically could tell the studio, "We don't like this scene. Give us a version without it, or we won't sell your movie in our stores" and the studios would fold. That may have stopped with DVD, but I'm not sure. |

I am with you Styer, I saw a special on Reagan that was being aired on one of the religious channels. Great man and loved how he talked about freedom, which is great in all but when it came to guns and porn he really was a downer.
Why people see the need to try to shut down the porn industry is beyond me.

It isn't a matter of "shutting down" the porn industry. It is more a matter of not having to explain to little Billy why those two women aren't wearing any clothes and kissing each other on that magazine when you stop in for a slurpee. Keep porn in the dark corners of society, not on open shelves where little eyes are exposed to it. |

He DID stand for freedom. Reagan did more to reform government and to change the way government works than most realize, and he did a damn fine job of handling the Soviets. He wasn't a perfect president, but I would sure as hell love to have another one like him. |

I'd rather my kid see a porn mag in 7-11 than see two men kissing on network prime time television. And even back in the "Pre Reagan" days the porn was behind the counter. |

If I were trying to produce a stiffy to play with there is a LOT more effective material. This is just one of those "fun" movies from the past like "Up The Academy" and "Animal House." Private Lessons wasn't a "porn" flick. If I want to run a "system check" I've got a bunch of Ginger Lynn DVDs. |

I watched that movie when I was like 12 and staying at a relatives house with my family in Florida while they were out of town . They had it recorded on VHS and I watched it several times. I wanted to be that guy! I can't believe they censored the DVD!!!!!!!! |

Yes, someone DID mention Wal Mart but it turned out to be an unrelated issue with respect to what I posted.
Close, I got a copy. I'm dissapointed that a movie which received certification in 1981, that was viewable on cable, is now censored today. I know you don't care about such things, and there are people similar to you who talk about us whinning for 10 years because we couldn't have bayonet lugs on our baby killing rifles.
Again real close. B movie but from 1981. And again, you couldn't care about censored films on DVD. Other people don't care about folding stocks and flash hiders. I tend to care about these things. Both are noticable indicators of lost freedoms. |

To me, MG's legality IS a matter of national priority, but (correct me if I'm wrong) you are NOT as mad about Reagan banning MG's as you are about Reagan obscuring your view of said females private parts. You would be INCORRECT in that assessment. As I specifically noted, even with the Meese Commission and Ron's general anti porn stance... "it didn't really have an actual impact, 80s porn was pretty good and I never got into some of the extreme crap from the 70s anyway" So really, with the exception of a few films (like "Private Lessons") Ron didn't even come close to restricting my access to stuff like 80s porn (Ginger Lynn, Christy Canyon, etc.) I simply find it ironic that I can view explicit adult content but some films that are basically "hard cable" which DID get certification at the time, are now editted. Would I prefer to be able to own an uneditted version? Absolutely. Would I rather have it than see the domestic MG ban lifted? Are you kidding? Hell I'd rather see the end of the 89 import ban than a lifting of the "grey spot" decree. To me those rights are a bit more significant. But I'd rather have all of them lifted. It's a lot like guys who could buy M-80s as kids and NOW they are illegal and the gooberment would have you believe they are doing you a favor. I just find it hard to accept the fact that ANYONE could watch "Private Lessons" on Showtime in 1981 and now, as an adult, I cannot get an uneditted version of the same film I watched as a young teen. Of course I also find it ridiculous that I cannot buy a HK91 or 93 in the same way I did back in 1983. |

No I said I'd rather have the FOPA 86 WITH the MG ban than NO FOPA 86. The reason for this is without the FOPA 86 the MG ban would have happened within a few years anyway. So no matter what it was gonna happen. And there is a real possibility that this was the last best chance to make the FOPA happen. Personally I'd love to see the 68 Sporter Clause removed as that is the foundation for the 68 (imported) MG ban, the 86 (domestic) MG ban and the 89 Import Ban. In a perfect world we'd have gotten the FOPA without the MG ban, but I don't think that would ever have happened. I think Reagan made the best possible choice in a less than perfect situation. And as I recall, when I specifically asked what YOU would have done in his shoes, you agreed he did the best he could given the choices available to him. |
