Don Knotts enlisted in the United States Army at the age of 19, serving during World War II. He served the U.S. Army honorably, and was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, Philippine Liberation Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal (with 4 bronze service stars), Army Good Conduct Medal, Marksman Badge (with Carbine Bar) and Honorable Service Lapel Pin. Don Knotts was honorably discharged on January 6, 1946.

He was so much more than Barney Fife and Mr. Furley.

;He was among an army of comedians from Buster Keaton to Jonathan Winters to liven up the 1963 megacomedy "It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World."

"Got one bullet for his pistol, has to keep it in his pocket"  Andy Taylor chiming in on Barney's singing of O My Darling.  One of the funniest lines ever on that show.

Another icon gone.

I always thought it was cool that both Don Knotts and Andy Griffith were still alive after all these years.  It was just a matter of time, I guess.

Oddly enough, I went looking for a pick of Don Knotts on the web just this past week.  I found a pic that I liked among many great ones and thought of the many laughs that he has brought me over the years.

Don Knotts was one of the last true comics of his generation.   Combining split second timing and great physical comedic abilty with genuine likeability and innocence, Don came into our homes each week making us laugh, smile and look at ourselves through the eyes of an underdog.  Don wove his characters from pieces of all of us.  That is why we all recognized a little bit of ourselves in him and his humor.  And that is why he will be so sorrowly missed.

Good night Barn.

Nonetheless, he's the model for law enforcement with that one bullet he kept in the left shirt pocket.  "Andy, can I load my gun?"

My Mother's Step-Dad went to barber school with him, and they were friends for many years.
I don't know much about the story.  It may have been while they were in the service, or out of the service.  I'm not sure.  I just remember him telling me stories when I was a really little kid and we visited my Grandmother, and my Grandmother mentioning it once or twice, later in life after her husband had died.

I read an article once about Don Knotts that said he was big fan of law enforcement officers.  Cops would come up to him regularly and give him bullets as a joke.  He kept all of them.

RIP Deputy Fife.
