I did have my home surround system turn itself on once which cause my sub to hum. Never happened again and I couldn't figure it out. |

Heavy earth-moving machinery 1/2 mile away could easily produce a low frequency sound you'd hear in your house. It's a little weird you wouldn't also hear it outside, but its possible its being transmitted through the ground to your foundation, so your house vibrates but not the air outside your house. This would especially be the case if there was any other noise outside (birds, breeze, etc.) that could mask the sound when you're outside or if there's a lot of stuff blocking the sound getting to you through the air (trees, buildings, etc.)
You could try the old Indian trick of going outside and putting your ear to the ground. If you can hear/feel the sound through the ground, it just means its a low-frequency that's getting transmitted through the ground but somehow blocked/masked through the air. Also, check any of the other appliances. We woke up one morning trying to figure out what the sound was coming from downstairs. Turned out the dishwasher timing mechanism broke and the dishwasher had been on all night. Our dishes were really clean, though. Or it could be the aliens. |

Flip to master breaker. If it goes away just leave it off.
Actuly flip it back on and shut off all the others. Flip one on at a time untill you hear the sound. Now that it,s localized, just unplug each device in the room untill it goes away. Thats the device. Or it could be bad power(not enough juice) comming into the house. |

I have the same thing, and it turned out to be a dusk to dawn light. The noise travels the mounting post and it is loud inside and hardly noticable outside.

I have seen an instance of a doorbell button that was stuck in. It caused the doorbell chime to hum until the button was replaced.

Check your door bell transformer also your television set . My SONY TV will sometimes hum after I turn it off. To stop the humming, I just unplug it for a few minutes, and it's ok after that.
Do you have an attic mounted whole house ventilating fan. ? Ceiling fans sometimes hum. The glass lightbulb globes can vibrate when the fan is in motion. I wrap teflon tape in the grooves that the lightbulb globes fit into. The little screws making contact with the glass can cause this hum. good luck. |

Quick way to know if it's something operating in your home. I live about 1 mile from railroad tracks currently... depending on conditions sometimes trains can cause a low frequency hum like that in the house, although it's not audible outdoors. It's very low frequency sound that is causing the house to resonate. |

Do you have lights on dimmers. The filaments will make noise when dimmed. If you have any speakers that are powered by a device that is on a circiut with flourecent lighting it will make noise sometimes.

A neighbor's heatpump compressor could do it. I have a neighbor that has one that I can hear in the house, but can not hear outside. Sound seems to come from the exterior wall closest to him.

I had a similar sound once. Drove me nuts. I even called the electric company to see if they had any other reports of transformers buzzing in the neighborhood.
Turned out, my cell phone's # key was somehow stuck on! So I just heard this steady toooooooooone no matter where I went in the house, yard, garage. I hated that phone. So glad when it's time was up and I got to upgrade to a new one! |

My hot water circulating pump can be heard much more distinctly in the house than in the garage where it is mounted to the plumbing. I need to try some vibration dampening techniques.

I have cronic migraines and they put me on epilepsy drugs and the damn things do this same thing at nite. Sounds just like heavy earth moving equip nearby. If I move my head it stops. Quit moving , earth moving equip noises. I learned just to ignore it. Getting old sucks.

I have a problem with a portable phone charger/transformer causing the same problem in the house.
Its the transformer itself that is causing the noise. it effects radios in the room. |
