The actor cast as the new bond got me wondering.
Yes, but the only thing I usually drive with a stick is my old Ford tractor.
I learned to drive in a 1976 Ford Pinto wagon 4 speed.
The original KABOOOOM!!!!! |
I've been drivin em since I was about 10 if you count the Kubota and bob truck I'm about to go learn how to drive a freaightliner 10 speed.
Fucking merciless... but it's true. I IMed Aimless, thanked him for getting rid of my fuck-up and pleaded temporary retardation. I hope it's temporary. |
Are you really a MAN if you can't drive a stick?
A MAN can drive a stick. |
The first car I drove was a stick pointed uphill, and I forgot to take off the parking brake. I made it up the hill though.
The last time I drove a manual, my hummer was left burning in the street...
Good point. It's kind of a loaded question. |
Yep, that's all I will own. Right now, 2 cars and 1 truck all have manual trannies.
I hate automatics. I hate tiptronics. I hear paddle shifting is the shit, but I have a feeling I would hate it too.
I want a clutch, damnit. Cars without clutches are for swishy homosexuals. |
I wonder if you realize it... There's a double entendre there ... |
Reminds me of a story when a buddy of mine asked me to take him and his wife to the airport. We all pile into his car and head out. About half way there I suddenly realize that the guy's Explorer is a manual and I haven't driven stick since, like, college!
It was a rough start once I had to pull away from Departures. You know that bit in The Terminator where Arnold looks at the gas truck's transmission and a diagram pops up? Same thing here. Off I went, back into San Francisco. It took a while with a few stall outs on the hills but I got the hang of it again. |
P08, I don't like you right now.
I've only ever owned 2 cars, both M/T. I will only ever own M/T cars. Driving is boring with A/T. |
Glad you took it the right way It's hard getting this "sarcasm" thing across on the Intar-web sometimes! |
My first stick was a new 1974 Datsun B-210.
Ok... as soon as you've stopped laughing.... Dad drove it home, parked it out front and I got in and figured out what to do from there on my own. |
+1!!!! |
I'm not a guy by any shape of the imagination, but Mr Playmore snarfed his beer last nite when the TV announced the new Bond Wannabe couldn't drive a shift.
He yelled at the TV, "WTF are you kidding me???" ETA: He taught ME how to drive on Memorial Day, 1990 on a VERY loose 1979 Toyota. He can drive a column (as he drove my dad's '51 International Harvester truck) but I cannot. |
Even my wife perfers a manual transmission.
She drives one of the few Honda CR-Vs with a 5-speed. The look on the dealer's face when we ordered it was priceless! |
I can drive a stick in my sleep.
How many here have driven a Column shift, that takes a little getting used to. |
LMFAO!!!!! |
I learned how to drive a stick in a 1980 Chevy Monza, my Pops took me out, put the E brake on going up a hill, got out, and said "Drive us outta here"
Ooops. I believe you are correct. |
Yes, I learned when I was young. My 13 daughter will learn when she gets her learner's permit. But she ain't driving my truck when she gets her license.
I am 21 never learned to drive stick. I am about to guy a beat up old truck to learn on, since i would like to buy a performance car in the next couple of years.
I had it coming. Besides, the smiley gave it away unless I was an uber-grinch. |
I never learned how to drive a stick. AND I DON'T CARE
Granted I'm only 20 so there's still time to learn. |
I special ordered my car in a stick. They had one just like it on the lot with automatic. I didn't want it. Mine's a V6 Cougar.
love my car. |
I can't drive one very well. My fiance was teaching me in her Mustang until I got nervous, dumped the clutch, and did a rolling burnout across a major intersection.
I've been thinking about renting a car to practice in. |
I cannot drive column shifts. That confuses the hell out of me. |
Gay?
The first car I learned on was a stick. And every car I ever purchased after that was too. Less stuff to go wrong. And just plain fun!
Automatics are for minivans so you don't have to shift while you are reaching back to smack the kids up. |
3 on the tree, babyyyyyyyy!! Of all things, I drove a 1969 Camaro which had a 3 on the tree. Wish I had it now as it's probably worth money. Back then, it was ghey as hell. |
Learned on a 62 Plymouth Valient - 3 on the tree. |
I have a shadow and an omni, both sticks, both have "agressive" clutches in them.
My first car was a beat up '56 Chevy. I brought it home one day with the clutch linkage broken when I was 16. Now it seems most guys couldn't drive the same thing WITH the clutch operational.
Learned on a truck 4 speed manual when I was 15.
Damn thing was so beat up and worn out and ran so bad it would die on me at stop signs or stop lights. I got pretty good at keeping my right toes on the brake and the heel of my right foot on the accelerator so it wouldn't die. 1970's style multitasking. |
My first car was a truck.
1970 K20 pickup with 350 and a 4 speed. The clutch was a heavy bastard and it had no power steering or power brakes. Fun to drive in NYC |
The clutch cable broke in my 911 once in February and I drove it every day for 2 weeks sans clutch until it quit raining and warmed enough on a weekend to replace it. That was one of my really broke times.
I can also drive a non-syncro transmission and can even double clutch my Ford 9N with a hand throttle. I have had trouble with a few like for some reason a Jaguar XJ12 takes about 7000lbs of pressure to edisengage the clutch and my buddie's 66 chevy with 3 on the tree, the clutch had a throw of about 2 feet and let our in the final 3/4". Also race cars with light flywheels. |
My daily driver is a 69 El Camino SS with Viper T56 six speed.
Unless it's a dedicated drag car, manual is the way to go. For a muscle car, it's nice to be able to put the power where you want it, when you want it there.
