I'm feeling curious today. Lately my life has been pretty strange. Last weekend my room mate admitted to stealing some of my bullets and swallowing them with tequila. I guess several of his friends did the same as well. I, on the other hand, was out of town visiting a friend. Now, I was pretty fucking pissed off at my room mate for wasting perfectly good 9mm Ranger SXT rounds, as well as being one of the dumbest people I know. I mean, come on, I had a hard time getting my hands on these bullets, and he could have somehow died for all I know. I was hoping honestly that a Darwin Awards type scenario would play out in my apartment. Now, my question is whether the human body would suffer any ill effects from the digestion of a bullet? Could there be a chance that the acid would cause the primer to detonate? Could the thing get stuck down there? Should my room mate be taken out of the gene pool?

If you eat a bullet and it velocity is, say, 1150 FPS, I'll bet you won't eat another.

All kidding aside, I guess it probably won't hurt, I just don't understand why someone would do such a thing.

Let me get this straight:

He actually ATE a live cartridge???

If he is lucky, he will pass the cartridge with no ill effects.

If he is not, he can end up with severe complications including bowel obstruction, lead poisioning, and all sorts of other toxic nastiness I can't even think of.

There are so many possibilities with this.....hmmm, where to start.

I don't think anything will happen in the digestive tract...but tell him to be careful when "eliminating." The bullet, firmly lodged in warm doot coming into contact with cold water and porcelain could cause a accidental discharge.

If you need more Ranger SXT, I have some for sale. They won't feed in my 9mm.

My guess is they introduced some lead into their systems since they swolloed jacketed HOLLOW POINTS. WTF how stupid could they be?????????? EVERYBODY knows bullets are made of lead, and hollowpoints are opened up with the lead exposed!!

Why...everybody knows that Ranger SXT's are the most deadly round ever created. After the mini nuclear detonation at the point of impact, the victim will most likely die from massive hemmorraging long before he would become septic from a little poo poo.

What you should have done is come up with some BS story about how the gastric juices would seep into the primer and set the round off. (And for all I know something like that might be possible.) Make up some story about how some guy swallowed a bullet and died when the explosion ruptured his intestines.

Act all panicked, then insist on driving him to the hospital. With luck you’ll get a doctor that either has a sense of humor or knows nothing about firearms and thinks an explosion is imminent. With luck they might get some emergency surgery out of the deal.

My dog ate 3 rounds of 9mm....She's fine. Of course she has also at various points in her life eaten rocks, a small tree, a mouse ball, half a bag of portland cement, and a portion of a house. Hopefully your roomie is smarter than my dog. Or at least tougher.....

So he ate the CARTRIDGE. A BULLET is just the part that comes out of the CARTRIDGE.

Bullet- I don't think the lead would do you much good, but just one probably wouldn't hurt you. If it was a TMJ I don't think anything bad would happen. Just come out later.

Cartridge- It might hurt coming out.

But if it came apart it probably would make him sick for a while.

Worst case senerio (and possiably the most unlikelyest and funniest).
The bullet is lodged in the intestines and somehow the primer is set off and the bullet is somehow fired while inside the body. The damage will be bad but worth watching. It is possiable that the bullet will be fired fast enough to cause serous damage, pics would be worth seeing.

Best case senario the bullet is passed and your roomate is unharmed.

More likely senario considering it was a hollowpoint with exposed lead, is that lead will be gradually removed from the bullet's exposed cavidy and enter their system. Depending on how they react to it the symptoms could be anywhere from moderate to severe.

There is a possiable chance of the bullet cutting them up from the inside (noticed with red stools) but highly unlikely.

I know exactly what will happen based on the type of round. If the round remains watertight it will pass through with little or no problems Assuming it does'nt get stuck somewhere. If it were to leak then this is actually good because the Primer and Powder will be rendered inert. And it will also pass through but the body might absorb some of the nasties like primer chemicals. The chances of it going off as far as a i can tell are virtually nill. Primers can only be set off by extreme heat or physical striking. Could the Stomach acid set off the primer? in theory yes. but in reality that is a remote possability. But finally i have to say that if the bullet DID go off he would probably be killed. The intense pressure of the chemical explosion in an exclosed air tight area (the stomach or intestine) will essentially rip his stomach to shreds. Did he see this done in a movie or something?

I think yer on to something here, but missed the boat with your overly technical treatment.

Stay with me now -

.45 - depends if from a Glock or a 1911. If the bullet was intended to be fired from a 1911, this guy is toast. So are anyone standing within 50 feet of him. For we all know the legendary ability of anything from a 1911 to kill everyone in a 50' radius. If intended to be fired from a Glock, the guy is still toast, but only he is in danger, given the Glocks tendancy to kaboom.

9mm - if just one bulet, he is in no danger whatsoever. We all know how people shot by 9mm rounds hardly feel it, so that will be doubly true for a swallowed 9mm. However, if he swallowed a mag full fo 9mm, he is in about the same danger as a single round of .45 fired from a Glock. But not thru kaboom, but rather because of the number of rounds

.40 S&W - the danger will range somewhere between 9mm and .45

22 rimfire - depends upon bullet placement.

I think he's just messing with you. While it is no doubt possible to swallow a bullet, it isn't easy. Heroin-filled condom swallowers practice a lot before they get good at it and use lidocaine to desensitize the throat. I read a whole article on it.

I took care of an AIDS patient who went a little crazy and swallowed a mercury thermometer. When he put it in his mouth it broke in half. The GI specialist took the top half out from the stomach with an endoscope and the bottom half with most of the mercury was followed by X-ray until he pooped it out.

There is zero chance of the primer going off.

The amount of lead either from the exposed hollow-point or from the lead styphnate leaking out is next to zero as well. Lead is virtually insoluble in non-oxidizing acids like hydrochloric acid. Old white paint chips are made from lead carbonate which does dissolve appreciably in warmed dilute hydrochloric acid. Totally different scenario.

I still think he's jerking your chain though.

1) Inhalation: The primer contains lead styphnate whose product of combustion includes lead oxide. The smoke contains this in finely divided particles that are easy to inhale.

2) GI absorption: This really is an issue with lead paint which is the carbonate, or more precisely a mixed carbonate-hydroxide salt, that produces lead chloride when exposed to the stomach. This is then absorbed through the small intestine.
