Hey guys...

My oldest is 17, and I started noticing some fuzz on his lip a few months ago.  I tried to bring up the topic of shaving, but I think I embarassed him. It seems to me that he is late to shave. I guess he is like me in a way, a full head of hair, but not much else.

I bought him a razor, and shaving cream, just left them in his bathroom...but he didn't use them...until tonight.

How old were you all, when you started shaving?  Any tips or advice you can share?

Any helpful info on the subject would be appreciated.

14, it sucked then and it sucks now.

Some men just bloom late, rather than early like me. My younger brother is 20, and he barely has enough hair to grow a goatee. My father cant grow a decent beard.

I sure as hell can. Thankfully my facial hair grows slow, so I can shave every other day. I had a buddy in college that had to shave twice a day. He could have a full goatee in a couple of days.

15 or 16, but not regularly. Also still dont shave daily if I can avoid it (and I can being blond).

I've been able to grow a full beard since 14...

16, and I hate shaving, so these days I'm lucky if I shave once a week

When I was I think 15 I would shave every once in a while, didn't need to shave regularly until my late teens though.

12 was when I started.

I had enough so my Mom to me to go see Dad about a razor, some cream and instructions.  I thought I was just too cool.  To this day though, I don't shave but twice a week since where I work is relaxed and none of the other guys there shave on a regular basis.  It really comes down to when my wife says that its time.

To this day though every time I warm up with the hot towel, I think of my Dad teaching me for the first time.  Funny how certain actions call up those memories.

Pffft Hot towel, these days I've been so lazy/ rushed sometimes I'll barely wait for the water to warm up, let alone use shaving cream . (I don't reccomend this )

So 17 isn't that late?

It was hard for me to approach him....and I wasn't sure if I should have earlier.

He just never looked like he needed to shave until recently.

I stopped using cream ten years ago and went with a plain bar of dial soap.  This has really made my area of the bathroom into the true anti-metrosexual bathroom.  Bar of soap, razor, toothbrush, toothpaste, deoderant....hmmm thats it.

No hot towel and suds and I might as well be using an epilady on my face.  The hairs will pull out before they get cut.  I have tried once with much pain.

Yup.  I could grow really long blond hairs (my hair is brown) in a week, but color didn't start coming to them till about 16/17.  My mustache is still pencil thin, and it takes a week for anyone to really notice that I haven't shaved to this day.  I am 22.

14. At my HS they checked. If you needed a shave you got sent to the Dean's office, and did it dry.

Not really.
I had to shave once every two weeks from 15-16.
Once I hit 18/19, it was everyday.
God, I fucking hate shaving.

on a side note, if you really want to embarrass him, keep reminding him about how he's "becoming a man now". Especially when his friends are over.

Freshman in high school...13. I remember not shaving the whole summer between freshman and sophmore year...came back to school and got all the "where were you? You a mountain man now? comments.  My JROTC Sgt Major looked at me, "That'll be gone tomorrow...right?"  "YES Sgt Major!"

Damn shame of it is that's one of the signs of premature balding is early facial hair development. That and the old saying the more hair on the chest by age 30...the less hair on the head by 40.  I had an Austin Powers rug on my chest by age 20....I was no longer able to maintain a flat top hair cut by age 26...it was becoming a horseshoe.

Tell your son, he's more likely to keep his hair when he gets older...that'll cheer him up if he's bummed about not shaving.

Had a Rican mustache at age 12... starting shaving it before 8th grade.  Only shaved completely on 3 occasions since then.

Record beard length is almost 3 inches from the chin at age 20.

Looked like a damn hippie for a while.

When I was 20 I would shave about once a week.

I'm 28 now and only have to shave about every 3-4 days.

I take after my moms side of the family....not a very hairy bunch.

My brother and sister take after my dads side of the family...quite hairy. My brother looks like he is wearing a sweater when he takes his top off, I always wondered if my sister was the same way

I got my first bits of fuzz in 6th grade, and by 7th grade could grow a full goat.

I guess that puts me at about 12-13 when I started shaving.
