Knew someone in school who read them. Never even opened one up myself.
I know that reference was dropped earlier on this site as an example of paranoia.
Not familiar with them myself. |
That's what made me think of it after all these years. |
I read about 30 of the early ones when I was a kid but it just got too repetitive.
The same old story. Mack shoots the shit out of the mafia who was made out to look like the Italian version of the three stooges. I finally gave up when he was about to go up into space and nuke them from orbit to be sure. |
Is that what he was about? Taking on the mafia?
For some reason I always pictured him as some sort of soldier for hire, going around the world and whacking badguys and taking out corrupt foreign leaders. |
Maybe he was onto something by taking out the mafia. Have you seen the "New Jersey" thread? |

Mack Bolan didn't have anything to do with paranoia. The story line started that Mack Bolan who was a Sniper in Vietnam was called home because his dad had killed his sister then himself when he found out that Mack Bolan's sister became a prostitute for the Mob to pay off a loan her dad took for a reason I am forgetting. The many books to follow cronicled his war against the Mafia, then he later went on to fight communism, drug cartels, terrorists, etc... The story lines tracked the political and social problems of the day with Mack Bolan being the hero.
He seemed to quit aging as he was in his thirties when the series started in 1967 so he'd be about 70 today But that's ok because it was simple escapist pulp reading. I had collected a good portion of the series starting in high school. The ones written by Don Pendleton were pretty good but later they were written by ghoast authors and became really formulatic and corny. Stil they are interesting as a whole to see how his character developes over years and volumes and as period pieces because they are like a snapshot of what was bad guy of the day at the time they were written. |
Back when I was a kid 1974-1979 I probably read everyone of the first 80-100 of them ... there must be a thousand of them by now if they're still being written!
Was "The Executioner" part of that series? If so, yes I read them.

Hmm...that's a tossup. Would Ben Raines have his Tommy Gun and Bolan have his M93R and Desert Eagle combo? Not exactly high reading, but def. some fun reading. |

Did he retire his AutoMag? |

I read a ton of them when I was about 10.
Pendelton is a lot like Louis Lamour - They are all the same after the third or fourth one. |
I read the War against the Mafia series (up to #38) and probably the first 20 each of the Stony Man books, Able Team, and Phoenix Force. I stopped when the ghost writers picked it up. Sometimes dull and repetitive, but plenty of gun porn.
I moved on to the Survivalist and the Guardians. Anyone interested in buying some Bolan Books? |
Ah, "The Guardians"...that brings back some memories. I actually have the entire series on my bookshelf. Haven't read any of them in years, though. |
I read dozens of them years ago and still have a good size box of them out in the garage. I should get rid of them but have not gotten around to it yet.
Yep. Gotta keep up with the times. He still packs the Berretta M93R though, with the folding stock and suppressor. |

I used to have a subscription back in the early '80s - Got the Mack Bolan series, Able Team, and Phoenix Force every month. Pretty cool stuff for the cheap books they were- good for reading on the crapper. There was lots of action and lines like "The hollow point drilled through the drug lord's right eye, snapping his head back as the bullet mushroomed and punched out the rear of Ramon's head. He dropped to the ground, the wall behind him sprayed with blood and gray chunks of brain. His days of selling smack to the ACLU were over. Bolan holstered his .44 automag and dropped an ace of spades on the quivering body. "

I read a lot of them. The only one I still have is Executioner #69 (heh heh) because it took place in my home town.
Yep, I remember them well. little black and white illustration of a side view and some basic specs. Good stuff! |
man i have not read one in 20 years |
My brother used to read them.
I read one or two back in the early 70's when he was fighting the Mafia. Is he still fighting the mafia or has he moved on to other evil doers? |
Man, that brings back memories. I probably read up into the high 100's (#190 something)
I had them all. Definately the first 50 or so were much better. The ones against the mafia were better. AFter the ghost writers, they got pretty bad. I wonder what I did with those. Oh yeah, I got into the survivialist too. John T Rourke. ha. |
i loved mack bolan books when i was a kid. anyone remember "the butcher"? "edge"? "narc"?
ahhh, the classics! ETA: all by pinnacle books! |
I agree. I read a few Mack Bolan, but I much prefered Able & Phoenix team. More weapons and better teamwork. If people still have them, donate the books to the library. You can take them off your taxes and indoctrinate the youth of America. |
I read all three of the series (Mack Bola, Able Team, and Phoenix Force) for a while a few years ago. Didn't start until well after the bit about him going after the Mafia. After the Mafia he just started doing work for the Government. Destroying terrorists, and the typical cheesy enemies of America and freedom thing.
Easy to read at 3 in the morning at work. Not much thought needed to keep up. |
+1 I have two BIG boxes full of Mack Bolan, Able Team, The Survivalist and other 80's crappy shoot'em up paperbacks. It's funny, when you're 12 they seemed like the best thing, now if I open one up, I can't believe I read that stuff. When did Mack get a Desert eagle? He always had an AutoMag. |
Able Team was the shit. |
I read 10 or so at about that same time. That's all they had at the library. |
Never hit the Mack Bolan, but I liked the Survivalist series. I read the very first of The Guardians, but never found any more after that. I promptly lost interest after John Rourke started being flash-frozen and meeting his grown-up kids and stuff like that.
I had a friend in high school who read Mack Bolan books a lot. He ended up robbing the neighbors at gunpoint and stealing their truck and taking his little brother hostage. He is the only person I have ever seen reading a Mack Bolan book.
+1 Plus, using a .444 Marlin as a "sniper" rifle was pretty far fetched too. |
I never understood why he cleared buildings with a silenced Beretta in one hand, and his Desert Eagle in the other.

Everything you wanted to know about StonyMan:
stormy-night.org/stonyland/stonyfaq.html Classic Mack had: Beretta 93R with Silencer AMT .44 Automag Weatherby Mark V in .460WM I remember the last books of the anti mafia theme: Monday Madness Terrible Tuesday Wednesdays Wrath Terminal Thursday Fridays Feast I was more of a The Destroyer fan myself. Nobody beats Chiun and Remo. Fritz |

Up until last year i had all of them up to about #125 i had most of the offshhot ones like the stoneyman farm ones and a few others, and i had multiple copies of quite a few in the first 50 with different printings and cover art. i have to admit i read almost every one of them picked up most in second hand stores like goodwill and the red, white and blue stores. Somedays when working a 24 hour shift at the fire dept. i would read 2-3 of them. I always got a little chuckle from them on Macks ability to kill in so many different ways. I had always wanted to but never did try to figure out exzactly how many bad guys he killed overall..........
I read the first hundred of them and the Able Team Books before I knew better. I was 12 when I started and 17 when I realized they were crap. I got them used so I wasn't out any money.
This may have been me!!! I read many Bolan and Able Team books in HS |
I even liked the move version "Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins". I would also like to mention Barry Sadler's "Casca: the Eternal" series. |
Mack Bolan and Phoenix Force got me through Middle and Highschool.
About all I can remember is something like "...wave after wave of copper jacketed death..."
YES! Death Merchant was the best. .44 auto mags. |
Read a few in 8th/9th grade and thought he was more "Bond" than Bond.
I also read a few Giddeon books, like Giddeon's Lot, etc. Pretty good stuff, from what I recall. Of course, my fav from that genre remains Doc Savage!! |
