I saw a piece on TV about that plane. Supposedly, they intended to repair it and fly it out but extensive damage ruled that option impossible.

It's good to see a piece of history restored to its former glory.

CKI... Glacier Girl is fly able, they take it to some of the air shows one or two times a year.  This year it will stay in the hanger, it is housed in Middlesboro, Ky.

This is one of the pictures I took while in the area last fall visiting.  Have a few more pics if someone would like to see.

Mighty purdy that Glacier Girl. If my house was big enough, I wouldn't mind housing her in the living room.  She'd make a great conversation piece.

They intended to fly it out when they found it in the glacier. I should've been clearer.

man talk about close to home!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i live near middlesboro and took my pappaw to see the plane when they first brought it in. he started to tell me about seeing a p-38 shoot down or basicly, it flew a zero into the ground when he landed in the phillipines during WWII. it was cool to hear that story when you have a plane like it infront of you. the man who was behind the restoration just recently passed away.

the best part of the project was they got the 50 cal. 's and ammo too. they had a drum shot by one of the guns on display.

+1

It looks goofy on the ground, but is pure poetry in the air.

Somewhere floating around there is a short clip of them firing the cannon from it into a 55 gal drum but I can't remember which site I saw it on.

Damn

Did you guys see the team that tried to recover a B-29 in Greenland?  The AC burned to the ground shortly after they started the engines.

I saw that. Very sad espically after all the work they put into it.

I seriously wanted to cry when that plane caught on fire. A man died out there trying to recover that plane. Very sad.

I called my dad, a former AF Crew Chief on B-36, and he was watching it too.  He couldn't believe how many chances those guy took (overloading the support AC, not seeking medical attention, rushing the job) to get that aircraft just to have it burn when the APU turned over.

Very sad.
