That's the COOLEST thing I have read all freaking day. Bet that sort of thing didn't happen very often. I remember my rifle number from Parris Island (6099012), but was issued several other rifles afterwards.

Great story.  I think all vets should be allowed to keep their weapons when they muster out.

And I thought it was awesome when my mom located and bought my dad's original car ('65 Ford Falcon) and gave it to him for his 45th birthday.

That's great. My grandfather has been reminicing about his M1 carbine lately.

"He applied to the USMC for permission to purchase the rifle and was eventually allowed to for $25 (in 1954). "

Wish they still let ya do that............

Just glad he lives in a free state and can keep it. new york or d.c. it would be a "weapon of war", the gun destroyed and he would be sent to jail.

Should be done with all retired weapons where the owners saw combat.

Who was the guy on here that found some papers in the butstock of his K31 and was able to track down the swiss guy who it was issued to?

A year or two ago there was a story in First Shot where a WWII vet order a M1 rifle from the CMP and was actually sent a rifle with the same stock he was issued in WWII.  Apparently while in theatre, he carved his initials in the wood under the butt plate and they were still there.  Of course parts were interchanged all the time and the chances that it was the same receiver is pretty small, but the stock was definitely the same one.
