way back when I was specifically told not to break link and use 249 blanks in my M-16 by a seasoned E-7 with a CIB.

My friend agrees, in my old age I am starting to think that if there is a piece of equiptment that can do everything most likely the military will use it rather than make two different types

I think the M200 is the only blank the army uses for 5.56???

I remember using mags full of m16 blanks to shoot the SAW and it didn't work that good but then again SAWS never really ran that great for me with m-16 magazines, even when they had the heavy spring...

The linked 5.56 blanks for use in the M249 work fine in the M16. During training when we ran out of ammo for the M16's, and still had a shitload of linked 5.56 left, we use the linked ammo. We've never had any problems.

There are separate blank cartridges for the M16A1 and the M249/M16A2 series.
HERE

If you're using SAW blanks in an A2 or M4, you're good to go.

Another SFC that can't read the manual apparently, the M200 blank is used both for the M249 SAW and the M16/M4 series.
