Any number of things, Fenced yard, rabbits or any vermin.  All they need to do is sniff the wrong thing and that dormate egg just got a new home. I keep my dogs on wormers all year around with the heart worm pills, its built into them for intestinal.

Fleas

Fleas are an intermediate host for intestinal worms.

sounds like you have an answer now.

pick up some crushed cayenne pepper(big bag) or "pet off"....to keep them out of the garden.

if you wanted to spend money it might not hurt to fence the garden above ground or by using an underground wire and shock collars.  (the "shock" isn't bad don't worry)
