I've never owned a car that needed anything other than 87 but my Vette drinks the good stuff. Thank God it gets great mileage.

You know what though? It's funny but I feel kind of good filling the tank, satisfied sorta. I love every mile I drive in that car.

42 (cetane)....

daily driver.... diesel/bio....

car is running on 92 , 100+ octane, driven a few times a year in the summer....

The Dodge Hemi runs on the cheap stuff.

The HOG needs 92 due to compression ratio.

The Street Rod gets 92, because it seems like the right thing to do.

My manual recommends it, and when I tried higher octane, it did nothing for my fuel economy or performance, that I noticed.

Seriously - I use the minimum octane needed for my engines, in my case that's 87.
If the engine runs fine on 87 there is no reason to use a higher octane as it can actually reduce the power output of the engine.

87 octane.

I love it when SSDG's and gun experts use the 87 octane analogy to explain why not to shoot wolf:

"Would you put 87 octane in your Mercedes benz? So why are you shooting Wolf through your $500-$1000 rifle?"

Well Mr. Genius, the simple truth that destroys your logic is this:
If the Mercedes were designed to run 87 octane, YES I WOULD USE 87 octane. Engines are designed with certain compression ratios in mind. A naturally aspirated low CR engine, in the range of 8-9:1 would run fine on 87 octane. If you step it up to 10-13:1 CR (yes the Lexus IS350 has CRAZY compression) you may need to run 91 or 93 octane at the minimum.
Not only that, but most engines have knock sensors now. Up to 2003, Ford did not install knock sensors in their 4.6L V8s so if your EGR and valves are a bit carboned up, it may ping on 87 octane.

Using 93 octane/Premium does not mean it is the best and cleanest gas. It's just more resistant to detonation and combustion.

That said, what ammo WOULD you shoot through a $1000 rifle? $500 per cartridge ammo? $1 per cartridge ammo? $0.20 per cartridge ammo? Even Bushmaster approves of using Wolf through their rifles.

Turbo Blue and some other race fuels are 105-115 octane unleaded. Then there's the leaded stuff. All around $4-$5/gal.

The VW gets 89 or 93, depending on price.

The 355 gets 93 octane for "efficiency".

What was it designed to use? Don't go to a higher octane than you need. Unless you're pinging right now, stay with the lower octane.

Sunoco in NJ, PA, OH, and MI has 94 octane. Try to find a Sunoco station in NY.

I would run the Lightning on 100 octane if I could buy fuel for it at any gas station.

92 or 93 per manufacturers specs (Land Rover & Harley Davidson). 87 does not work well in the Land Rover (mileage suffers significantly) and the HD gets good enough mileage that I haven't bothered to try the cheaper stuff.
