Make it whatever you want. Something you worked on for a long time, a car, an invention, a book, whatever.

Someone steals it from you and denies you the fruits of your labor. What should their punishment be?

To steal the fruits of my labor warrants transformation to a vegetable.

so it seems we have a new problem in the world?

I think the punishments have been reviewed enough in the past 2 or 3 centuries to be close to acceptable norms.

A sentence comensorate with the crime.  You steal my car, you lose your liberties for 5 years.  You steal my wallet, you pay me 10 times what was in it - OR - $5000, whichever is higher.

Then again, you up the ante, you'll have frivolous and vindictive charges filed with more frequency.  You'll then have a hard time getting cops to take you seriously.

There were no reasonable selections so I didn't make one.  We already have a criminal code to deal with petty theft, larceny, and patent/intellectual property rights infringement.

Where's the selection for having your hands cut off?

sheesh....

Four times the value of the loss or more using the juries best judgement, if it can not pay, involuntary servitude.

The Bible is pretty clear on what it should be...pretty damn fair too!

Go read leviticus!

1 year in jail and fined triple the worth of the product.

Seriously, you wouldn't shoot some punk just cause he thought he could be "gangsta" by stealing your tv?

I see this thread being used later on for arguements (and even refutement) in future File Sharing threads, double standards and such.  As much as I hate double standards, File Sharing is the only case where I make exceptions to my normal thoughts on theft.

I have not voted on this thread.

When referencing women, ie: you do a ton of work on a girl and your buddy then sleeps with her, that's called a "ninja loot".

The punishment must be swift and severe.

I need more information.  What is stealing, what are the fruits of labor?  If I hire you to breakdance for five minutes, and then sell videotape of that performance fifty thousand times but only pay you once for your performance... is that stealing?  What are the fruits of labor?  Is that the profit earned from your labor, or is that the time you spent hourly on that job?  What if I fix your leg in the ER and you can then go out and earn your living for the next 60 years, do I deserve a part of that?
