Every night I get to work there are e-mails threatening to take disaplinary action against all of us employees for crap that 90% of the time I have no idea what they're talking about. I'm so tired of it, I e-mailed my boss this morning and said, why all the threats? This is why the moral here sucks. How about a compliment once in a while. Keep in mind I have a government job so he couldn't fire me if I showed up to work on crack naked. My boss is a moron, and he needs to realize why everyone under him dislikes hm, and dislikes working for him. Maybe, since he is new to management, he'll pick up on this. Otherwise he'll blame me, and try to get me in trouble. If he does, I really don't care because there are plenty of other jobs were I work that would not be under him. I have been starting to apply, but government jobs take for ever.

Few things make a job worse than poor management.
Having a boss that sucks can ruin an otherwise great place to work.
I am going through that same thing now.
Just gotta be honest with them and hope they back off.

Otherwise, there are other jobs!

Yeah, thats basically how I see it. I plan on talking to him about this Monday and letting him know if things keep going this way I'll be out of there within 2 or 3 months.

This sort of "management" is so prevalent these days.  One or two people out of hundreds fuck up and don't perform properly, but what does management do?  Punish EVERYONE for it and make their jobs more difficult, instead of punishing the offending parties.  Happens at my job, too.

Bad managers rarely change in my experience.

They are bad managers for a reason.

You probably just identified yourself (As far as he's concerned)
as the prime troublemaker in the office.

The other side of the coin is the boss's view of the situation.  He can not do anything to improve performance because you all are government wonks that can't be fired.

I would not want to be in the bosses shoes.  Glad you can never be fired!

Not a gov job, but I told my boss a similar thing last month and was 'let go' on Thursday.  I guess telling them that I actually laughed when I saw my W2 wasn't such a good idea...

You think you have it bad?

I also work for the government and my boss is a female minority.  She has about as much ability to lead our staff as my 7 year old nephew has to install nuclear reactors into submarines.  Her bosses know exactly how terrible of a job she is doing, but their hands are tied because of her race and sex.  She could actually pull up her dress and piss on her supervisors desk, and they couldn't do shit about it, except document the occurance.

Amen.

Every job I've had would have been heaven were it not for just one to three people at each place who make life miserable for everyone else.

Sadly, doing your job well and (more often than not showing how inept they really are) just tends to hurt YOU more than them.

I'm praying my next job will be different, but I'm not holding my breath.

A few years back, everyone got shit raises--.7%. Our shipping department (the entire department) wrote and signed a letter to the company to the effect of "If this is all you can afford, you probably need it more than we do. Love, the people responsible for making sure all product gets to customers on time"

The following Friday, after having been dressed down by a retard of a manager, they quit without notice. 5 people (the only ones who knew how to run shipping) left after lunch. No notice, not so much as an email... The chaos was unreal...Retard manager got canned, corporate requested (begged and pleaded) that the shipping folks return.

Point is, managers need to understand that they live and die by the people under them. They can either make you look like you're a genius, or make you look like a moron...

I did the same thing in Early January to much different results.

I am a marketing professional (technology product management, metrology equipment for the nerdy ones), and in the last year, I got about 0% raise due to being "way over my radford ratings" scale (was grossly misclassified when we shifted to theis system), lost our Director of marketing, a position I was being groomed to take one day (now I report directly to a remote VP, and 0% chance of advancing to that level without a non-existant stop in between as a Director.  I.e. there is no path for advancement in my future), and I was transitioned abruptly and without warning from a commission compensation plan, where I could count on ~ $1200 - $1500 take home extra a month, to a "corporate" management bonus program, where if some fucktard in a different division screws up badly enough, nobody gets a bonus (and someone did screw up that badly, to the point of having to go to jail for his financial malfeasance).

Also, I have to deal with an asshole VP of Sales who thinks he knows my job better than me, and insists upon directly inserting himself where he does not belong, nor where he can contribute even an iota of benefit.

I just unloaded on my boss (the VP) and laid it all out, from the raise that wouldn't buy me a bottle of wine if I drank (less than $500 take home per year, on a salary near $125K. For perspective, all, and I mean ALL my direct reports had raises near the 5 figures range, because they all were radford ranked far above their salaries), to the loss of ~$15 - $20 K of TAKE HOME PAY that may or may not be replaced by my bonus depending on factors beyond my control, and to the fact that I am taking a huge ration of crap from said VP of Sales.  I told him that I was going to start the job search, and that I expected to be gone in 6 weeks.  People with my background and skill set are in dire short supply, and the recruiters have been all over my ass for the last 6 months or so.

So, instead of being penalized, he took concrete steps to increase my happiness.  Fixed my mismatch in grade scale, promised an adjustment, hired someone to help relieve the Tactical marketing burden, and most importantly (this was in the works before my blow up, but my unloading accelerated the process) the sales VP lost all power, and was reassigned to a "special projects/business development role with no more hand on day to day sales activities.

I think my boss (he is relatively new) realized how absolutely screwed he woud be when (not if) I left, and is really making bold efforts to keep me happy and productive.

Now if I can jettison a product line that is more trouble than it is worth, life would almost be good...

Yup its a gamble and you won.  I would want a go getter like you working for me too because it takes pressure off me.   A smart boss doesnt know what he is actually doing IF, he can read people and make them do things to the best of their ability.

Some of my best bosses were idiots but were smart organizers and smart judges of people and their abilities.   Asskissers and idiots were fired and he had a streamlined staff that would work their asses off and he would sit in his office and take a nap.

He really wasnt an idiot, he was billiant.  Thats the difference.

try being more qualified than the entire management staff, both resume-wise and ops knowledge.  whenever a new boneheaded personnel policy comes down the pipe, i have to play politics to get it changed, just so we don't lose our core staff of good people.  and i have do do this without looking like i'm manipulating purely out of selfishness.

the first and most vital job of a manager is to get the best possible work out of his people.  the problem is not so much with idiot managers, it is with the people who are hiring and retaining them, and who don't understand this concept.

When my boss comes to work, the employees scatter faster than cockroaches when the light comes on.  He's a micro-managing asshat.  I'm just waiting for him to have a massive stroke that affects his mental and physical abilities where he is unable to continue working.  I could never wish him dead.....

It's an exaduration, although actually they can't fire you for that. They would have to put you in a re-hab clinic. My point was I actually have to have a history of problems that shows I am an unfit employee, and it takes along time. Thats just the way the govt. works. I don't normally rock the boat, I just do my job, but today I got fed up.

Oh BS. The boss can go find the problem children, take them aside one by one, and ask them point blank to stop doing what they are doing. If they decline I'm sure there are ways to help them to go elsewhere. Then locate the ones, like the OP, who are holding things together. Talk to them. Tell them, in a group, that you see them as the heart of the division and to please come to you with ideas that'll make things better. Check back with them a few days later to show that you mean it. Stick to your guns. Things will get better. That's leadership.

I see you also know the govt. unions. I have saved them, not because of that, because I don't want to go that way... nobody wans to hire a snitch... but because this dickhead I work for may try to cause some further problems for me down the road. Gives me ammo incase of that.
