I am a WAN guy at heart, although lately its a jack of all trades scene...
A few years ago I was doing some consulting for a major international airline. My comoany had the contract for all CPE (routers, firewalls, etc) for the WAN. My job was to remotely access equipment via modem and configure it, then bring up circuits. Typically, a technician was dispatched to a new site that was about to come online, physically install the CPE, hook up the cables, then call me on the phone and let me know he was ready for me to dial in and drop my config on the router. Once I had the site up, the customer would test, and after that, they were a new site for the airline.
We were installing a new kiosk area in a US airport (i forget which one, possibly LAX but it was a long time ago and there were so many)...tech calls me and says he is parking his truck and will be inside in a few minutes and wanted to give me a heads up....cool. I get my stuff ready to go and wait for a call. 30 minutes goes by.....60 minutes goes by.....finally I page the guy...the TSA wont let him bring his tools with him! He is caught up in security trying to explain that he isnt there for a flight and that he needs access to a kiosk in a secure area. They tell him he can take the router but not any tools, not even a screwdriver. I called a representative from the airline and had them meet him at security to escort him......no change. A uniformed airline employee with clearance to be at the kiosk came and showed the work order...TSA said they would let him down to the kiosk, just no tools...they said he needed special written permission from TSA in advance and they would issue a special access badge for him. Long story......we scrapped the entire install. Customer was charged about $5,000 in fees for my companies time and the whole thing had to be rescheduled.
