i just bought this jeep from someone i know. he has no title for it but i can work around that.

i think its a 57 (judging from the ser no.) and i am not sure of the model, i was thinking early cj5 but maby a late 3-b. not that informed in old jeeps.

i am planning to put a diesel engine in it, but not sure what type to get. 6.2s are everywhere, but isn't that a little too much? i am thinking about a rabbit engine.
most important thing though is that i don't want any computers in the truck. i have my reasons.. i know some of you gearheads are going to know the year/mod right off. any suggestions on engins, ideas as to what i am getting myself into?

this will be a daily driver, SHTF-BOV. so reliable is more important than fuel economy, but economy is pretty important too.

Looks like a CJ-5 to me, hard to tell with no clear side shot of the body.

I would skip the diesel, IMO. The 6.2 (or similiar) would be more $$$ & trouble than it's worth due to the weight & need to beef up the suspension. The Rabbit diesel may be your best bet if you have to go diesel.

Take the VIN # & you can find out exactly what year it is.

thats exactly what i was thinking. the 6.2, though common is just too much engine. i prefer diesel because the fuel stores a lot better, and if properly maintained, they will last just about for ever.. and i know how to make bio-diesel..

It's a '62 CJ-5

Willy's
57548/8305  155765

Starting in 1955 the first set of numbers is:
57(universal jeep line)  5(body type)    4(cyl.)  8(4wd)

Kind of difficult to read but the Dec column for 62 looks like 15564something.

I think you should get all of your friends to write Chip Foose a letter so he'll trick that bad boy out for you on overhaulin and it won't cost a dime!!

$750 i figure the solid frame and body that doesn't require a crapload of work is well worth it..

4BTA Cummins. The 4 cylinder version of the Dodge truck diesel. You're going to want one hell of a transmission behind that, like a ZF 5 speed from an older Ford 4X4 Super Duty, like one of the early '90s trucks. Don't even dream of keeping the original front & rear axles, either. Another possibility would be an Isuzu diesel.

Look at the 6cyl Nissan turbo diesel that was in the International Scout.  It has the same bolt face as a 440 Chrysler, so trannys aren't a problem.  It's all mechanical, so no computers to mess with either.

This guy bought them all when International went belly up. www.jescoweb.com/

It's too tough to get parts for these engines, at least in my area. Everything is special order. Get something mainstream.

i think if i go diesel a 6 cyl is too much, i don't want to tear up rear ends all the time.. i am thinking 4 or CYL should be enough..

3-53t Detroit with the aluminum block from the Gamma Goat. Bellhousings exist that mate them to chevy bolt pattern transmissions. 103Hp 213FtLbs torque source for engine
