After you defrag why are there still fragmented files?

First off, I know, I know. I have a small hard drive.

I just ran the disk defragmenter. There is still a lot of red. What is all of that? Is it left over junk I don't need? If so how do I get rid of it? If not, does this look normal?

A 12MB harddrive? Get a bigger harddrive so it has room to move some stuff around. And lay off the porn.

They are fragmented because Chuck Norris wants it that way.

Computer Daily Magazine once had an article about that. It went on to say that 87% of fragmented files are typically the result of downloading freaky German fetish porn.

It is because there is not enough room on the drive to defragment those files. DELETE a bunch of crap and try again.

Try something like CC Cleaner, run it and then defrag again. It found all kinds of old files and such I didn't need anymore.

MS claimed for a long time that you didn't even NEED to defrag NTFS volumes. A *good* defrag tool, unlike what ships with Windows, will do the job right.

The red files are files that the built-in defragger can't move.

It ain't the defrag tool. Most likely, some of the files are locked exclusively (in use) by the operating system while your defraging. Sometimes, there's no way to get around that. The OS has to have some files open and locked to run. It's the nature of the Windows beast. However, judging by the graphic, your drive is busting at the seams.

Why don't you go into windows explorer and search your whole harddrive for all files, sort the files by size and delete some large files you no longer need (be careful you don't wipe out essential files tho). Your system will run quicker if it has some free space to play with.

That's probably the area reserved for your pageing file. If you have more than one drive, you can switch the page file over to the second drive, then defrg the first drive. You can restore the page file to the first drive after it's been defragged.

I would like to do that but I don't know how. I have only basic computer skills. Format C: is where you wipe everything and start new? I did this one time following directions someone gave me. I don't remember how it was done. I do know it took a long time, installing everything again.

Last time I defragged it said there wasn't enough space. I think I had 10% free and it said I needed 15%. As you can see I got it up to 20% free. I don't know what else I can get rid of.

I wish I could. I am not a computer person. I have screwed this thing up so many times because I have deleted things I shouldn't have. I don't have a clue what 75% of the stuff I am looking at is.

When defragging, you need to shut down as many programs as possible. The comp can't fix files that are in use. It also needs space to put files while its defragging.

I would recommend using a third party defrag program, most can be used for free for a few months( you only need to use it once). Also run spyware and virus programs. These programs can run in the backround and hamper defragging.

Actually, the green area is the untouchable swap file.

It can be useful to set the swap to a "tiny" size, reboot, defrag everything, then return swap to automatic management. You can buy some working room for the defrag that way.

Raxco PerfectDisk is what I use on all my PC's. It also has an option to defrag WinBlows system files on boot-up.

PerfectDisk will defrag system files automagically on re-boot. It also has a "smart disk placement" that will improve disk performance.
