I do not do this often, but I need help!
We pride ourselves in the fact that, we take care of our ownwhen they are in need. In the past,we have helped people who have lost -or were close to losing- their homes. We have helped veterans in desperate need of financial assistance, when they have fallen on hard times. We have helped the sick,as well as those overseas fighting for freedom and risking their lives in the military. Tonight,I ask you to help a good man who fits all the criteria mentioned above. This man is a combat veteran and member of the site.He has always given cash and donated his time whenever it was necessary, without ever expecting anything in return. He is seriously ill with a lethal disease of the liver, that will require a transplant. His disease-Primary Billiary Cirrhosis (PBC) -is not the result of him abusing his body with alcohol, drugs or anything else.It is a disease that affects some people in a similar way to Diabetes,Lupus, etc.(IOW,not "self inflicted") I will not bore you with details, but I must tell you some basic facts. His medical care will apparently be covered by the VA,so we do not have to worry about the horrendous medical expenses that will be incurred with the transplant.Thank God that in his case, the VA will not abandon one of our veterans,as has happened to so many other vets. Because of his debilitating illness and jaundice (yellow skin, eyes, etc) due to the non-functioning liver,he can no longer be employed. What we need to help him with is: food, rent, utilities and other expenses, until he gets his transplant. He is the kind of man, who has not said a word about his condition (I found out through another person) and has continued participating in the site.............. at a limited and deminished rate. If giving him a piece of my liver were possible (I already asked) ,I would not think twice about being his donor.Unfortunately,it seems that a partial liver transplant is not a possibility in his case. That is the kind of man I am talking about. I ask you to open your heart to one of our brothers,AS IS SO CHARACTERISTIC OF THIS COMMUNITY,and send whatever you can to help him through this hurdle. Mrs Gloftoe has been designated as the person to collect the contributions, both because she is trustworthy, and because she is already handling the initial urgent collection that was done to get him through this month when we found out. If you'd like to contribute via Paypal, please send your donation to: [email protected] DO NOT USE PAYPAL TO PAY FOR RAFFLE TICKETS, PLEASE! (If you have sent a payment to the other address she gave you, that's fine too. It all goes to the same account.) For those who prefer to use checks or MO send to: Ed Avila 1657 W Bloomfield Rd Honeoye Falls,NY 14472 I will forward her the contributions I will open the pledges with $200. Thank you in advance, and God bless you all! <Title edit now that his identity is known. --tbk1> <Edit II to remove the "!" from the end of MrsGloftoe's e-mail addy. --tbk1> |

Tag for more information.
I can't donate $200... but probably around $50ish. I hope thats ok. |
Mr. Avila, being a poor college student, I can't afford a $200 pledge. However, once the PayPal address comes up, I will donate what I can to it.
Tagged for physical address. I don't do PP.
I can't afford $200, but I will do what I can. BTW Ed, tack this thing. |
Guys,a small contribution from many people will do a lot of good.
I thank you all deeply and sincerely for whatever you can spare. $5 from a college student means more than $5,000 from a professional or business owner. I know our heart wants to give much more than we can afford to.I know from my own experience thanks! |
Tag for a mailing address. I can't give much, but I'd still like to.
I can't add much more to what Ed has already posted.
I will say though that I consider it a great honor to count this man among my friends. I hope we cause him no embarassment by doing this because that is not our intention. He is family and we look after our family. Thank you to every who has donated and to those who will. Thank you to MrsGloftoe for stepping up to look after the logistics. George |

I'll be in training for my new job for about 6 weeks and won't start that training for another 2 and a half but I'm tagging to be able to help later on, and I will match that 200 in 2 $100 donations after I start getting paid.
Yes,Sir! I did it after you |
I can't add much either--except to say he made me aware of this a few weeks ago and swore me to secrecy. I'm a bit surprised to see this, but anyone who knows Ed Sr. knows there's no stopping him. It's legit, in case anyone would have any doubts, and it breaks my heart. This man is as good as they come--a combat veteran, highly dedicated to all that is right, and a man that I have long been truly honored to call a friend. I wish him well--and Godspeed in dealing with this most horrible situation.

I don't like tacked topics.I will untack and let it float for a while. If others are like me,they never look at tacked topics

Don't worry Mr. Avila, we'll keep this thread to the top. |
A check will go out tomorrow Ed.
ETA: I missed it untill it was untacked. |
Those of you who are sending money, please indicate whether you'd like your name included (and what your board name is, if so) or would rather stay anonymous. Thanks!
This is definitely a worthy cause IMO, and I don't usually endorse these kinds of things.
ETA: I just realized I used my 15K post for this cause. It must be a positive omen. |
I dont use checks but I will get a money order in the mail Wednesday AM.

I will be sending money tomorrow.
Can anyone tell me if this is a NY crew member? No names, just a yes or no. It hits a little harder if it is and maybe the locals could put something together? Prayers sent too. |

Ed,
Please tack this because there's going to be a whole bunch of folks that may not see this tomorrow if you don't...this is such a good cause we'll need everyone to get involved. HH I will make sure it gets tacked once it becomes sluggish, but I want to give people a chance to float it on its own. EdSr |
