I  saw a advertising from a private party selling a tool I want. Price was 100 OBO. Tools worth 175 or so. So i meet up with the guy and I examine the thing and its ok so I told I'll take it. he comes back and said theres a guy coming to see it also and that he would take 140 for it.

I told him the ad said 100 OBO. he said yes it does but the offer can be higher then the 100.

I think silently WTF are you talking about. told him 100 was what I would pay and if he wants to sell it then great,if not  have a great day.

After a little thinking on his part he said ok.

So what does obo mean?the 100 should be the highest threshold right?

That's my take on it, especially on this board.  No auctions allowed.

i suspect that when he knew you wanted the tool, he made up the BS story about someone else coming to look at it so you would not negotiate too hard.

While were on the subject whats up with this "first" shit?

For instance,

For sale 1 go kart. New Tires ,New Carburetor.

First $500.00 gets it.

WTF is up with that?

Do people normally NOT take the first asking price that comes along?

"Oh no thanks I'm waiting for the SECOND $500.00"

I think that is the first dude that shows up with the 500 cash gets it, not the first dude that says "I'll take it" and never pays.

Ever sell anything on EE?

It might be for this reason.....

My dad was selling a diesel ford f150 and had 2 buyers show up the same day.

They were aggressively out-bidding each other right there in the driveway.  Both buyers were getting fired up.

My dad made $2500 more than he was asking and closed the deal just to end it before a fight broke out.
