Lawmaker Look at 'Safer' Cigarettes
(WSB Radio State Capitol Bureau) -- A public hearing will be held this morning at the State Capitol on a bill to require safer cigarettes in Georgia.

The Senate Agriculture and Consumer Affairs Committee meets at 9 a.m. to take up Senate Bill 487 by Senator Don Balfour (R-Snellville).

It would require the sale of special cigarettes that contain a safety feature and don't stay lit if they're not puffed.

"It basically puts rings in a cigarette and you have to puff it to keep it going," he says.

Balfour says 5000 people die each year from smoking related fires, usually falling asleep with a lit cigarette .

"If they're not smoking the cigarette (it) will go out at three different points in time which will save a bunch of lives," he says.

Balfour says currently New York and California have such a law.

What will they protect us from next????? And the guy who proposed this is a so-called REPUBLICAN.

I love how they can WASTE time and MONEY on Steroid use in BaseBall, and safer "Foreproof" cigarettes, but cant do anything about our Southern Border

Just remember, they get paid the same whether they work on real issues or non-issues.

The agenda:  Pass the law.

Law will increase price of cigarettes in GA.

Increased price designed to deter smoking.

This is essentially another cigarette tax.  Nothing more, nothing less.

Another take.  Ban certain kinds of products, and mandate certain safety features.  Sounds familiar.  Pretty soon, smokers will need forms, letters from doctors, and licenses.

The end result is tobacco is illegal.

Illegal tobacco will be sold on the black market, causing a rise in organized crime.  Violence that goes along with it will be used as a reason to ban guns.  It's happened before.  It WILL happen again.
