Does anyone know if gun companies try product placement like Coke or Pepsi or car companies?

On "24" Jack Bauer used to drive a GMC YukonXL and carried a SIG 228 or 229 two tone. Now, Jack and the rest of CTU drive Fords, and he carries a HK USP Compact.

It has to help sales, even if it reflects firearms in a negative way. Thanks to Dirty Harry S&W 29s sales soared.  People like the Bren-Ten 10mm because it was used by Don Johnnson for two years on Miami Vice.

This summer, the big blockbuster will be Miami Vice and it looks like the main rifle for Sonny Crocket is a SIG 552.  Don't you would think that could help SIG 556 sales?

I have wondered about this as well because of James Bond movies with the PPK to P99 move.  Especially after the Aston Martin to paid BMW product placement.

I'm thinking yes.  It's one of the few ways  to get their product advertised out side of the gun mags and company publications.

I'd like to know the level of involvement by firearm companies in pushing their products onto films.

However I do know for sure that their product placements work VERY WELL.

I wonder if anyone would give a shit about desert eagles if it weren't for movies.

A lot of people i know that are gun stupid think they are the best handgun ever made.  Probably just from seeing them so often and it being one of the few things thats easily recognizable to them.

I've never given it any thought but I'm sure it is being done.  If I was a marketing agent for one of the companies, I'd sure as heck be dealing with Hollyweird.

Especially since they can't advertise on TV.

Dirty Harry was the best thing that ever happened for Smith and Wesson.

The Springfield 1911 used in Sin City was not lobbied, it just shoed up in the movie.

Ever hear of the film "Winchester '73" ? Enough said. (good movie, BTW)

The SW M29's success is due in lage part to "Dirty Harry."

IMI's Desert Eagle's success is due in large part to "The Matrix".

I don't know exactly who makes it/what it's called, but that "Quigley Down Under" movie sure seems to be the main driving force for that one Sharps rifle used in said film.

Then again, on the other hand, there are only so many different guns the props departments can realistically choose from. I wouldn't be too surprised if it's all just coincidence. After all, hollyweird is one of the last places one would expect to make deals with the gun industry.

Tom Spithaler from Olympic Arms made some posts on rec.guns a few years ago after "The X-Files" selected Olympic Arms as the guns the show would use in its episodes.  You might check groups.google.com to find the posts.

They did nothing, the studio picked SA without notifing SA.
