SAN DIEGO - Twenty-nine people were injured, some critically, when a van being chased by U.S. Border Patrol agents crashed on the U.S. side of the border with Mexico Friday afternoon, authorities said.
The van collided with a semi truck and overturned on Interstate 905 around 1:40 p.m. after Border Patrol agents pursuing the van laid down a spike strip in its path, said California Highway Patrol Officer Larry Landeros.
There were no immediate reports of any fatalities. A helicopter landed on the freeway to ferry victims with life-threatening injuries to a hospital. The number of critically injured patients was unclear.
News helicopter broadcasts showed emergency personnel treating patients on a roadway strewn with debris and injured people.
Landeros said initial reports indicated three 14-passenger vans and a sedan were involved, but only on van crashed.
A Border Patrol spokesman in San Diego said the agency did not have any immediate comment.

Can we just toss the injured back over the fence, or do we have to treat and release?

Dozens Of Border Chase Victims Remain Hospitalized
Feb 11, 2006
cbs2.com/topstories/local_story_042162648.html
(AP) SAN DIEGO Nearly two dozen people remain hospitalized today after a van packed with suspected illegal immigrants crashed during a chase near the Mexican border in San Diego.

A blue Chevrolet Sportvan carrying 28 people overturned yesterday after hitting a spike strip that Border Patrol agents had placed in its path. Twenty-two people were being treated at six hospitals.

Police were chasing a total of three vans, which were suspected of being part of an organized smuggling operation.

The chase began around 1:30 p.m. when Border Patrol agents received reports that large numbers of illegal immigrants were being loaded into three vans in the Otay Mesa industrial district of San Diego.

The loading site was near a San Diego warehouse where investigators last month discovered the exit to a 2,400-foot tunnel used to smuggle drugs.

Border Patrol stopped one van and took 35 people into custody. Another 33 people were held after the second van hit a Border Patrol vehicle and a car and halted as it tried to make a U-turn.
