Random poll.

Personally I prefer WinRAR. Better compression, split files, compressing compressed files, etc....

Personally, I prefer to wrap everything up in a tarball, then use bzip2 compression.

RAR

then  ACE

ZIP as a last resort.

I got WinRAR a few years back and even updated last year, because I like the self-extracting exe and volumes options--but since then I have been told that WinZip does those things now as well.

Also--previously WinRAR had one important advantage in that it could zip entire directories with sub-directories, and have them unzip intact. WinZIP would only zip one-directory deep: a bunch of files in ONE folder, with no sub-folders allowed.

Previous to XP I don't think Windows came with anything that could unzip .zip files. Now that it does, sending a .zip file to a *regular person* isn't the logistics trial it used to be.

Apples and oranges... they're really two different programs for two different purposes.

Win Zip is an archiving app... it's good for compressing and sending multiple files into one single file.

WinRar is better used to break-up one large file into multiple files.

Correct answer... Get Both.

Edit to add: I could never understand why someone would break up one large file using WinRar, then use WinZip to make it all one single file.

I hate RAR archives. .zip, .gz, .tar, those are all fine.

Go RAR or go home.  ZIPs are for "normal people" (read: techno dinosaurs).

PKZip 2.04g.  Self-extracting EXEs, spans disks, anything you need.

It's still a good tool.  Has been since I upgraded to 2.04g in about 1992/1993.  Of course, I mostly use the windows built in ZIP utility now, but I still have 2.04g archived, exactly as I downloaded it from a BBS.

Thanks for your input guys!!

Last 2 question did you buy full version of WINRAR or will the free trial work good enough and where did you get it?

The one thing PKZIP still does quite easily is unzip an entire directory full of zip files.  I haven't bothered to learn whether Winzip does, but from what little I could be bothered to poke around in it, it doesn't look like it.

WinRAR is a better thing all the way around, but it's never around when I need it.  Most every machine I deal with has some way to get ZIP files extracted.

tar.gz is what I use the most,  then zip.

With disk space so cheap I don't bother with much compression so tar would be just fine.

+1

Its free, opens and extracts just about anything, is easy to use, and reportedly has better compression.

Last I checked, the free version will work forever. It just has a nag screen.
