I was filling up today and noticed the familiar 9/10ths of a cent signs after the price on the big signs. Why bother ? I just don't get it, every gas station has it  so one station isn't like making a penny more a gallon. I feel like buying a gallon of gas next time give him 2.24 cents and then take a penny and cut 1/10th of it off.

If you took all those little 9/10th signs off every gas station it would probally go the damn moon.

Advertising/Marketing, make it look cheaper than it really is...

Say gas is $2.10 9/10...

You never hear someone say, they just paid $2.11 or $2.10 9/10. They say: "I just paid $2.10" for gas. Same with "Coke on sale for $2.99" etc. It sets something off in our sub-conscious.

The food stores do it too with the 10 for $10.00... People want to buy 10 because they think they are getting a deal, even thought you can buy 1 for $1.00 99% of the time.

Store up the road sells a 1.5l of Crown Royal for $39.00, store 10mi (round trip) away has it for $38.00... My friend will drive to the $38 store because it's cheaper... Even though is probably costing him more because he has to use gas. Consumers are pretty silly.

I also believe that the 9/10 is part of some tax on the fuel.

I prefer a 87/100 scale.

Dude, how long did you go through life before noticing this?   I've bought gas for 65 cents a gallon.  Even back then, they were doing this.

Quite a long time ago, someone was selling periodicals for 1 cent - in a time when cheap things had moved up to nickels and dimes - and ran into a problem when nobody had any freakin' pennies.  They pursuaded merchants to price things like "$2.99" in order to get more pennies into people's hands.  It didn't take the merchants long to realize that $2.99 looks cheaper than $3.

By the time gas stations got into the act, it was all about just making money.  The taxes on gas are a hell of a lot higher than .9 cents.

Marketing for the stoopid.

Some folks will use up a 1/2 tank of gas to shop at the "99 Cent" store...rather than walk across the street to shop at "Everything's a Dollar" store.

The bigger question is do the pumps round up or down on the partial cents....
It just irks me to think of how much they could have screwed us (ME) out of by rounding the 9/10ths of a penny over the years.

Someone should go get 1 gallon of gas and write a check for$2.159 and see what they say.

Just another way to pry more taxes out of our claws and make it look cheaper than it is

It is not part of any tax.  It goes back to when gasoline was 23 cents a gallon and less.
As has been posted earlier people see the 2 big numbers (sadly now 3 numbers) and just think they are getting it for 1 cent a gallon less (actually 9/10ths of a cent a gallon less)

It really makes no sense because everyone does it.

Way back in the old days when gas was 20 cents, that 9/10 of a cent fooled the eye.
