Your average sailor *might* have shot the M-14. The Navy does use the M-16 and variants, subs, SPECWAR, SeaBees, etc, but your average sailor used the M-14. Also rifle traininig wan't heavily emphasized back then.

They use Colt 727 carbines and M4A1 (which are usually converted from older M16A1s) variants for sure.

Sail watchstanders have an M-16A2 and a Mk-46 (short-barreled SAW) during surface transit.
So yes, we do. I WAS NOT trained on the M-14 to receive my weapons receipt cards. One is for the M9 and M11 and the other is for the M-16. |

The key to the first post was the time-frame, ie 1995. The M-14 was, by far, the most often used rifle in the Navy, outside of a couple of specialized communities, SeaBees/SEALs. The M-16 family is only really coming into vogue after 9/11. |

We carried M16A2s when I was deployed in 2004 to Iraq with NMCB3 (Seabees). Had to clean them everyday because of the fine dust that was everywhere.

M-14 is being deleted from shipboard service. The only purpose it will have on ships is as a line throwing gun. M-4 and Mk-18 carbines are now being introduced fleetwide. Unfortunately we still retain the M-9 as a sidearm. Watchstanders are also qualified on the Mossberg 12 gauge.

Some do, many if not most don't. My roomate was a nuke back in the late 80's and early 90's nad the only thing he fired was a 1911 at the range in boot camp, once.
I've also been on rifle ranges in the Guard and we had to train people there on the spot because they were in the Navy and had never touched an M16 there, and this was their first time firing one. |

I was in the navy for 3 1/2 years and never fired a government owned weapon.

Im in a Naval Coastal Warfare Unit.We have M 16s, M4s, Mk19s, 50s, M 60s M9s.
So the answer is YES. |

A friend of mine currently in the Navy said he say a demonstration of some kind(didn't get all the detail the conversation was through IM) with the Mk 43 (m240 for the guys without sealegs
 ) and said that the guy didn't secure the barrel properly and went and fired the thing  he said the barrel flew downrange and left before he started laughing his ass off

Friend of mine in the SeaBees is in pre-Iraq training in CA right now. (Port Hueneme)
He said they were issued M-16 A1's...I questioned him on the "A1" portion. Yuo the rear sight is an A1 all right. He said they were NEW in crates. Semi and Full auto selector only. No 3 shot burst. |

Our last at see period on of the Navy guys (I guess he was one of their MPs) had a M16A1 lower with a new 11.5" Colt upper, KAC RAS, and a LMT SOPMOD stock.

Thats the Mk18. Now being issued to all ships for their MIO (Maritime Interdiction Operation) boarding teams as well as shipboard security. M-14's are being deleted EXCEPT for Line Throwing (blanks only). |

The M-14 was also used as a shark gun when divers were in the water rescuing a man overboard close to the ship. When the small boys did swim call they'd also post sentries to watch for sharks. The Marines aboard carriers used M-16s even back in the 80s. |

I thought the Navy carried M16A3s? This model is the A2 but with Full Auto instead of Burst. I always thought that was a point in the Navys favor. Anyone currently serving know?

There are A3s out there. There are 727s out there. M4A1s, Mk18s, and I'm sure there are M16A1s and M16A2s out there as well. The Navy really hasn't committed to one or two variants. We just take what we can get. |

We had SeaBee's stationed near by come to our armory for the yearly LTI on their weapons. I thought they were normal A2's until I saw Safe-Semi-Auto on the selector. Yep, they had A3's. Full auto goodness.

On board the USS Stennis in 2002 we had M14's, M16A2's, M9's and the Mossberg M590.
I qualified on all of them, but prefered to carry the M14. Never got to shoot it with the fun switch on though, but I was up on deck shooting it every time there was a fam fire or a qual shoot.  At the local Navy base the regular TAD gate guards carry the M590 Shotgun and the security forces carry either the M590 or the M16A2 and an M9. |

When I was a WEPS on a PC we had M11s from the SPECWAR days, M4A1s, M14s, Mossbergs, M2s, M60s, GAU-17s. M9s are general issue, but the M11s pop up now and again with specialized units like SPECWAR, pilots IIRC, NCIS, and a couple of others. The Navy has started to move to a twin M240 mount which is pretty nice. |

So...this thread begs the question....what is the Navy gonna do with all those M14s? Will they all be recycled as SOCOMS or will they end up at DCMP? I want one!!
