So I go to irs.gov and to the free efile thing.  GRRRR!  I did the whole H&R block site.  Went through the whole thing.  And then it asks for a GD Pin that I never set up.  It never asked me to set up a Pin.  WTF?  Why does Uncle Sam have to make it so hard to take my money?  Oh, and in the process of me trying to figure out this BS, I closed the critical window and now I can't log back in.  A couple of hours wasted.  I'm gonna just file a paper return....

A couple of observations while I was doing my now deleted return,
when asking for your spouses suffix....Ass should be an option.
is my spouse an exemption....OH HELL YESSSS!  He's excempt from all that is holy!

I just used Turbo Tax online for Federal and NY. It was so easy, with itemized deductions I finished both in 1 hour. I went with the intention of just checking it out because it is free to use for all military ( Go through Onesource for anyone interested ). Instead I finished both of my returns.

Oh yeah this is Joe proof filing!

There was an offer to get Lowes gift certificates. $100 card for 90 bucks...got 30 cards. That with my 20% off cupons from e-bay will save quit a bit of money on the new office I'm adding on.

Getting 4K back of your tax overpayment!  People always focus on their refund or what they have to pay at the time of filing.  I used to be the same way.  I was happy to get a few thousand back.  But then I started looking at how much I had actually paid in taxes, and not the refund itself.  Talk about a buzz kill!  I think one year I paid over $25,000 in income tax (before kids and a big ass mortgage.)  Sure I got a refund that year, but so what!

Fracking IRS....

Dont even get me started on that.

All I will say is I dont believe anyone should get a refund LARGER than what they paid in.

Thats all.

Enjoy my money.

I think she means that she got a refund of $4699, because $5219 was withheld but she only ended up paying $520 taxes.

You are assuming that she had $520 withheld and she got $4699 back.

I'm thinking she wants to know how she can have less money withheld so that instead of getting a refund that she can just not have it taken out of her paychecks.

I've always heard that its just better not to have anything withheld so that you could just put it in a savings account or invest it in something that will earn you some more money and then just pay what you owe in taxes. Because if the government is withholding it they sure as hell arent going to give you any interest on what they owe you.

Nope The way she wrote it, she paid in $520 and thanks to deductions(kids) and more than likely the EIC she is getting back $4699, it happens alot.

It isn't possible to get back more back than you paid in.

There are credits and deductions.  But you are never credited for more than you paid in,
and deductions only apply to what you have earned and would be taxed on.

Edit:  May be wrong here.  I'm looking into it.

You need to have some witholding.  If the amount of money that you have to mail in after filing your return is a certain percentage of your total tax liability, the government will assess a penalty.

You're wrong. You've been able to get back more than you paid since the first Clinton term. It was Clinton's brilliant idea to use the tax code as a form of welfare.

+1

(Not directed at you txwxgirl, but at the fracking IRS, AGAIN!)

And yes, it is entirely possible to get far more than you put in.  The child tax CREDIT (not a deduction) is $1,000 per child.  A credit means it comes right off the tax bill, even if you didn't pay that much.  It doesn't cap out either, although it is reduced as income goes up.  So that family that had octuplets?  Yep, the get an $8,000 credit off their tax bill.  Again, a credit, not a deduction.  They also get the standard deduction for each of those kids.  So it is entirely possible ot have a ZERO tax liability, get everything back that you paid in, AND get additional money back from the government!

And who says we don't fucking live in a socialist society????

I am getting a refund this year and just changed my allowances using the W-4 form for 2006.  The payroll department should be able to tell you how much each additional allowance will reduce your tax withholding for the year.  You can work out how much you'd get back per paycheck.  Uncle Sam doesn't care about how many allowances you have as long as he gets his money and you correctly report your dependents on your tax return.  I am going from 0 allowances to 3 to almost eliminate my refund.

Not to mention it doesn't matter that I had 5 months tax free (in a fawking combat zone) and could have been paid back more than I paid in.  I have no rug rats so my return got cut off at exactly what I paid in, regardless of deductions and credits.

Here is a warning for turbo tax and other online filings.

You may have the IRS send you a letter saying you owe them money.

I filed in 2003 w/ TT.  The e-filing does not send in all supporting docs.  I had a loss to write off, but since they did not get a few forms, they did a cost basis of zero, and said I owed them $3200

SO I had to dig out my shit and send that in too.

They say it happens ALOT.
