I am not posting this as PD bashing, but just as a reminder to folks that you have got to be respect firearms because any lapses and the consequences can be most unfortunate.

Accidental Wound Kills Police Chief
By Associated Press

August 9 2001

PIERCE CITY, Mo. -- The chief of police died from an accidental shotgun wound to
the chest while responding to a call at a cemetery, a coroner ruled Thursday.

A city worker found Chief Jim Dacy's body Wednesday morning.

There didn't appear to be signs of a struggle and Dacy had not called for help
before the shooting, Lawrence County coroner Don Lakin said. His car was running
and there was no evidence of foul play, the Lawrence County sheriff's office
said.

Dacy, 61, was on a call about an animal and apparently opened the trunk and
reached for a shotgun in a nylon case.

"From where the entry wound was and the pellets came out of his body, it
appeared he was bent over, pulling the gun out. Something hit the trigger or he
accidentally hit the trigger while trying to get the gun out of that case,"
Lakin said, adding the investigation was closed.

Pierce City, about 40 miles southwest of Springfield, has about 1,300 residents.
Its police department has five officers.

I bet the next chief of police will instate a "Cruiser Ready" policy on department shotguns: hammer down on an empty chamber, magazine loaded.

You mean there are agencies that don't carry it that way? Foolish.

At least he didn't have far to go.

Sorry. I couldn't resist.

This is most definitely cop bashing. If you cannot post something that portrays the police as noble infallible demi-gods, you should not post anything at all.
