How do you find out if someone left you something, assuming they don't know where you are?

I know there is a trustee, but is that the only way?

Does the State make public a notice.

Any other thoughts appreciated.

Did they die testate or intestate? This will determine if there is a probate. If not the laws of decent and distribution will take over.
