i want a round that goes a hundred milliion fps and has a flat trajectory out to a million billion yards or so. what round would this be? does anyone make a 20mm case necked down to .17 ?

I've heard .220 swift to be a VERY fast round. In the neighborhood of 4000fps... Not sure if it's the fastest though...

Weren't there tapered bore rifle rounds (based on the 28mm German anti-tank cannon) available in the '30s?

For common rounds look at the .220 Swift. For a more common round look at the .22-250 which is a bit slower stock but still over 4000 ft/sec handloaded. At that speed the 55 grain bullets are amazingly explosive in a target and carry huge amounts of velocity way beyond the .223 rifle's range.

Yeah,last I read the .204 is the fastest commercial round available. However (without looking at a ballistics table ) I don't think it is THAT much faster than the 220 swift. I thin I heard of the Navy doing test on a rail gun that is supposed to be accurate out to soem crazy distance of 300 nautical miles or some stuff like that. I'd say that thing would have to be traveling pretty quick. |

The limit for gunpowder driven projectiles is about 6,000 fps. These speeds have been achieved with experimental weapons and rounds. At such velocities, barrel erosion is, shall we say, rather severe.

Mic McPherson and Byrom Smalley have designed their SMc line of cartridges to be highest performers they could get with modern primers and propellants.
32 grain 204 caliber bullet at 4650! and it will be a factory round soon, i hope. Savage is already offering the chambering as a custom shop operation. just a note- as i understand it, the 5/35 SMc designation means 5=bore diameter 35= usuable case capacity (to base of neck) S= Smalley Mc= McPherson more info here www.superiorballistics.com/ although it seems to me the web site is not yet displaying graphics. |

I always thought the .257 scramjet was pretty impressive. Fires a 85Gr bullet at 3975fps
The .284 Firebird fires a 120gr bullet at 3900fps |

Winchester super short magnum 243, WSSM 243, they report 4100 fps, Olypic arms is making an AR upper for these, but I did hear the bbls weren't holding up for very long.

The Sandia Labs Z accelerator has magnetically 'flicked' dime-sized projectiles at up to 34km/sec.
One of the applications is kinetic energy weapon...now if they can just get it portable.  |
