Last cigarrette was Dec. 31st, 2004.  Never looked back, never felt better, never been in better shape.  Just up and up quit, cold turkey.  IMHO addiction to smoking is a farce.  It's all mental.

I can't believe I purposely breathed in all those lung-eating chemicals for several years.

I hear the worst non-smokers are ex-smokers.  We gripe a lot more about people smoking than those who never touched the stuff.

I agree.  The smell is kinda putrid to me now.  I spend a lot of my free time in Vegas casinos and, while I don't complain openly about it, I make it obvious with physical gestures that I don't want it around me.  I'm also always warning my friends about the grim survival stats of lung cancer.  As an ex-smoker, I feel my words can caryr more weight.

That’s the same month and year I successfully quit (there were lots of earlier unsuccessful attempts).

For various health-related reasons, there’s absolutely no doubt in my mind that if I hadn’t stopped I wouldn’t be around now.

Quit for the third and final time Dec 31 2004 havent looked back --first week was rough, couple of patches got me through. Told my wife last week that I felt really good for the first time in as long as I can seem to remember. Getting ready to start back running this year and lose the weight I put on when I quit.  In 1996 I ran the Peachtree in 48min flat ,last year I couldnot go up the basement stairs without wheezing. Its nice to breathe agian easilly. 2 side effects I always thought were due to stress and not smoking --migriane headaches --have not had one in about 9 months and for some reason I have stopped snoring/restless sleep like I used to. I have endeavored to NOT become a nazi ex-smoker and it seems to be working out --each smoker out there neeeds to quit when THEY are ready and when they are they will, I think I smoked for a few extra years becuase of the a*****e ex-smokers badgering me all the time. congrats to those of you who have sucessfully made it --think of all the extra ammo and toys you can buy withthat money instead, and for those of you thinking of quitting --you wont regret it.

Quit in January of 1989 after about 10 years of a pack to a pack and half a day.

Quitting is a sure thing if you can follow one simple rule: You can't have the first one.

November 1991.  Yep...it was a little miserable for a couple weeks.  27 year habits are hard to break.  The one thing I heard that helped me through 'that urge' was "If you don't pick up a cigarette, you won't have to go through the withdrawl again."  Then it was $20 a carton.  Now it is around $40!

I'm 6'4" 220lbs not a fat ass and went to the beach for the 4th of july 2004 and with the heat and all ,my legs swelled up ( not the middle one LOL!)at the ankles bad enough I had to sit around all day, freaked me out when I called a friend nurse and they told me it could be a heart condition, always been healthy with no problems till then and then it went away .
Then my Dad quickly died of cancer 6months later which he was also a smoker!
Got to see the poor guy go from being a robust ,stout guy, 60 years old, contractor, dwindle to look like a WWII  jew in a starve camp, he had to wear diapers at the end.  It was time to hang it up! the shit just aint good!
Just plain suicide!
