HURST — A man who police say had robbed the same convenience store five times was fatally shot late Wednesday in an exchange of gunfire with the owner, Hurst police said Thursday.
Police found the man behind a fence after he ran out of HEB Food Mart, 1601 Sotogrande Blvd. His identity has not been released.
The shooting happened about 11 p.m. Wednesday, when a man armed with a handgun entered the store, police reports said.
“The store owner recognized him,” said Hurst Assistant Police Chief Richard Winstanley. “The owner grabbed a handgun and fired.”
The suspect was hit, but fired several rounds, Winstanley said.
A clerk who had been standing near the counter was hit in the back and arm as he ran out the door, Winstanley said.
The clerk, a 36-year-old Euless man, was taken to Harris Methodist Fort Worth hospital, but his condition was unavailable. His injuries were not life-threatening, police said.
At some point, the suspect ran out of the store and tried several times to jump over a fence near an adjacent apartment complex, according to police reports.
He finally made it over but collapsed, police said. Patrol officers found his body near the fence.
Winstanley said the man had been a suspect in five robberies of the store in December. The holdups stopped in January, when police began a surveillance on the store, the assistant police chief said.
Patrol officers were not watching the store Wednesday night.
