Yup.  I know his son Ben Gromley Jr. and his grandson Ben Gromley III.

They look very much alike now.

ETA: He lived his dream (an odd one, IMO) of becoming a professional reenactor. He died when he fell asleep at the wheel driving to or from an event and rolled his truck. He was a good guy - we were very close for a long time - but got a bit crabby as he realized (as many have) that making a delightful hobby into a job leaves you with no hobby and a crappy job. However, he is one of the few men I've known who did exactly what he decided he was going to do with his life.

Quite a guy.

He was an undertaker for a long time, then a trucker, then a CW reenacting suttler who wrote and recited poetry (his wife/SO sang) at reenactments and SCV balls and such. He was pretty famous on the CW circuit (AFAIK - I quit reenacting 20+ years ago).

Ok so....what am I missing?

Did he do something really profound and Earth changing?

Is that YOUR plan?

Because most people don't, but still might lead inspiring and meaningful lives.

Well, he once showed me a letter that had come into his possession. It had been written by a 20-something reenactor to a 16 yo reenactor as part of an effort by the former to seduce the latter. The predator was a smart guy, and the target a tender lad whose head was filled with dreams of martial glory in bygone days. The bulk of the letter was a near-scholarly disquisition on the history (both actual and fancied) of homosexual bonding among military men through the ages. He wrote about the general practice of pederasty among the classical Greeks and surmised that it must have carried over into the ranks. He spoke of Alexander's supposed lifelong "union" with his adjudant, and of a fabled classical-era legion composed entirely of pairs of homosexual lovers. He closed by writing "Homosexual pairings of long duration and profound passion were always a feature of the life of men in maritime service - especially Pirates !"

Thus, I can say with assurance that Ben did something really profound and Earth changing: he gave me the gift of the impeccable, all-purpose jokeless punch line "Especially pirates!", the merest whisper of which will in proper circumstances send either of my sons and many of my friends (whatever their sexuality) into crippling paroxysms of laughter.

Damn, I thought I recognized him.  After reading the article from the link, I believe he was at the re-enactment that I went to at Olustee in 2003 with my sons Boy Scout troop 181.

He looks like a guy that used to do a history tour at this memorabilia place in Eureka Springs, AR.  Reading the article it looks like it'd be up his alley but I don't think it was him.

Honestly, I thought it was Nick Nolte made up to play Santa Claus.

On the other hand, it's good to honor a man whose life has inspired others.
