I just installed it. Pages are loading VERY quickly - a noticeable improvement. It supposedly fixes "several" memory leaks, too. So far, so good.

February 1, 2006. Firefox 1.5.0.1 is a stability and security update that is part of our ongoing program to provide a safe Internet experience for our customers. We recommend that all users upgrade to this latest version.

Here's what's new in Firefox 1.5.0.1:

* Improved stability.
* Improved support for Mac OS X.
* International Domain Name support for Iceland (.is) is now enabled.
* Fixes for several memory leaks.
* Several security enhancements.

when you upgrade do you have to unistall the previous version or does it automatically overwrite it?

No uninstall required.

I usually uninstall the previous version before an upgrade. However, this time I just downloaded the new version and it installed itself over the previous version.

It overwrites it.

Running it right now, and memory usage does seem to be lower, though I never really noticed a problem with it before. *shrug*

I was using firefox and about an hour ago a message poped up saying there was an update, it pretty much did everything for me. I don't really notice any difference, but I guess they did something to it.

uses alot less memory. Went from 150mb to 31mb ram used.

mine went from 120k to 25k. seems to respond a little faster, but my machine eats up the internet

The memory leaks were serious issues: I've seen v1.5.0 Firefox take up to 123MB when doing heavy duty tabbed browsing and some add-ons: now it uses less then 50MB with the same configuration. Mozilla also fixed a potentially dangerous security hole dating to December 8th. 2005... and people vilify Microsoft for patching the WMF vulnerability in a mere 9 days, but I digress...

They did fix a problem with the latest Java runtime (v1.6 Update 6) which was not always called properly by the browser; this led to several sites not displaying content correctly. My wife and kids are happy because a lot of Flash and Java-based online games now work again.

I noticed a 20% improvement on page loading times after going to 1.5.1: this on a Via-VPSD MII 12000 Mini-ITX machine (not the fastest...hell, a PIII 800Mhz will own this thing in nearly all respects, but since it only uses like 17 watts when browsing, and 23 watts playing a DVD, I'm not going to complain.) I haven't yet tried it on my SMP systems.

I'm using Opera now (which is REALLy good), but will try it again if the memory leaks are fixed.

Ha...thats nothing. I had 1.5 eating up over 400MB a couple of times

I agree. I like Opera. Quit using the fox when it started using all my memory.... The hard drive light was constantly on...

well the memory leak issues have been kinda fixed, it takes about 50% longer to use up half of my ram before I get pissed and restart the program.

Hopefully this will fix all of my memory leak issues. If I left Firefox up all day while browsing it would get up to 350M, ridiculous. I have had to close it every few hours and restart it to recycle the memory.

I was just browsing around and it sucked up 85 megs memory. Still better than 1.5.

MY problem with the memory leak was that the more stuff you download the more memory it eats up. So if you browse for a really long time or download a couple of gigs worth of movies using your browser, Firefox will eat up 200-300mb of memory and eventually become unusable.

Hopefully this fixes that issue.

Had it for about a month and a half now on a new compuiter and it has been great.

When I did the upgrade before this, I uninstalled the first version and the upgrade didn't take. So I reinstalled the earlierr version and then the upgrade, that is still seeming to work fine on the old computer.

Yep it appears they STILL have NOT fixed the memory issues.

Mine seems to be working better, for now. I was getting REALLY tired of the browser hanging when a link opened in a new tab was loading - I couldn't scroll another tab, switch tabs or anything.

Memory use seems to be a bit better too.

They have known about the problems and after 1 1/2 years, the cannot fix them... I will just use Opera.

Thanks. That's a great extension to use instead of tweaking the settings manually like I've been doing.
