I recently watched a show on the history channel that included a piece on so-called "smart guns", these were weapons that would not fire unless in the hands of an authorized user.

Colt had one that had to be in close proximity to a wrist watch that you wear that allows the gun to be fired. I have read about other companies experimenting with fingerprint i.d. systems.

A spokesman for HK said on the show that he expected these weapons to be the weapon of the future.

My question is would you buy one of these?

Remember take into account what would happen if the "safety device" failed. Or if you were in a situation as a police officer that you had to pick up and use your dead partners pistol.

In a word NO. Electronics fail. Ever hear about ctrl+alt+del? Besides If you believe in the theory of arms for defense of tyranny than what happons when the gov comes up with a way to triggar the guns so they will be ineffective when the come to take them?

No, I wouldn't. Just one more thing that can fail, I would keep it simple.

Never - plays right into the anti's agenda.

That is unless their willing to plant 'smart' chips in the teachers who peddle agenda ridden crap to my child, politicians who lie under oath and betray the trust of their constituants, news anchors who refuse to relay anything but thier own liberal ideals, multiple birth 'single' moms, and every last Chuck Schumer, Diane FineSWINE, Bill and Hillary Klinton on the face of the earth.

Then maybe.....if they were giving them away [pissed]

hmmmmmmmm, would kinda make it hard to swap firearms at the range.  Or more importantly, in a "situation".

The only smart gun I'd own is one where I could say "gun, shoot that bad guy, then clean the toilet.  Don't forget the blue stuff this time".

No.  Not even then (but I'd think about it).

Ever seen judge dread. I liked that smart gun. It did what the anti's wanted and it also allowed you to say things like "grenade" and then you could shoot a grenade. It was a full auto, armor piercing, rocket launching super gun. Sounds like fun to me.

If it was as reliable as a glock and didn't cost any more to buy I might buy one.

My goal in life is to have at least one of everything.

Ok, I have since changed my mind.

I want one of those Annihilator 2000's from Beverly Hills Cop III.

Fully equipped.  Plays rap music and Jerry Lewis, has microwave oven, cellular phone, etc...

I am reminded of the comments of an old Texas ranger, who when berated by a young training officer for having a leather strap around the grip safety of his old 1911 45acp said, "Son if it wasn't dangerous I wouldn't own the damn thing!"
I'm w/ him, I want my firearm to be deadly.

Not a chance. Especially if it's bundled with Windows and Explorer 5.0.

KISS applies here.

I'm with Scarecrow.  The only friggen smart gun I want is a 1919 mounted on a steady-cam vest. Thats what they used in Aliens, with some goodies slapped on for the high-tech look.  I doubt anyone would mess with me if I open carried that, the next time I was in a free state.

I'm having trouble thinking
of another industry
that that would
take the time to develop,
manufacture,
and market  products designed
to appeal to everyone except for
the people who actually use them.

Here in Calif. you will have to buy a "smart gun" beginning in 01/2002 because of SB15.  The govt-types  spins it as child safety, but to me, when someone transfers one of these guns without authorization from the State, it will not fire.  It is just one more step in govt control of our guns.  But I bet there will be some ingenious entrepreneurial-types that can make some slight modifications to enhance its functionality.

When something is idiot proof, only an idiots would use it.

I always thought that the person using the gun made it a "smart" gun.  I have never called my guns dumb.  Oh yeah, a Ruger 512 I once owned.  That damn tongue that had to just right after a thorough cleaning.  That was a dumb gun.

Nope.  Got enough dumb guns that go bang every time I pull the trigger.  Don't need any that might not do the same.
