is this round actually mean enough to put up with a glock for carry?

if so, is the compact manageable with a finger groove extension for the magazine?

if not, are there any other mfg.s that are making a decent 10MM gun for carry?

or is the 10MM just not really worth a damn?

I carry my G20, 1006 and witness all the time.
The compact is too small for my hands.

Yup. Get some RBCD ammo and vaporize ten pound roasts for fun. The 29 is the only gun that will work for everything from concealed carry to black bear hunting.

Only you can answer that. But the extension doesn't cost much to try. It seems to be comfortable and manageable in an average-size hand. YMMV.

Not really. Not in that size package, anyway.

Try it. If you like things that go bang, you will probably find it just a bit more entertaining than most other handgun rounds.

I have no real data to back this up but unless you handload I don't think the 10mm is much different than a .40S&W out of those subcompacts.  Factory loads for the two use the same components except for a longer case on 10mm.

I love my 10mm full-size.  I've passed on it in the subcompact, though.

Recoil is identical except when I use DT 135 or 165gr.
In a Jackie Stewert voice, (A wee bit more snap)
I use the 29 because the 20's grip is to hefty for me.
If you have big hands do not get the 29.

Sure, I count those as almost handloads.  They are not readily available and cost more.

Perhaps the correct term would be "tuned" ammo.

Remember that these hot loads use faster-burning powder to get their performance out of the subcompact.  That probably results in a bit more recoil in a lighter gun.  Think about how you feel about that in a carry weapon.  If the first shot does the job then all's cool.  If you are not confident of that then... Just a thought.

For me, I realized I can get 3-4 9mm rounds in the bullseye in the time it would take me to confidently get two 10mm on target.

Doubletap is pretty fierce.  Shooting outdoor range junk like water jugs and chunks of wood I would hit the same objects with 10mm and .45 and the 10mm always did more damage but my .45 was more accurate. The only real knock againt 10mm is that it hasn't reaaly been used against people that much yet.  I did see a picture in Glocktalk of some guy who used a G20 with an extended barrell to bring down some big assed buffalo/bison..he gutted it and sure enough there was a hole straight through the heart

to me it's one of the saddest facts of shooting and firearms in US history that the 10MM went the way that it did.  That's just my honest opinion - it's a fantastic round/caliber - again in my honest opinion.  Too much overlap with existing calibers?  OK I'll buy that but I dont want to hear shit about too much recoil - maybe in the town of Brokeback Mountain.  FBI agents couldn't handle the recoil - good God almighty, how sad...

My take on the whole thing is that while the 10mm is very powerful, it's also a bit of overkill. Between the 10, .40, and 9, all have bullets which will expand to 3/4" and penetrate 12". Ranger-T's, Speer Gold Dots. For the negligible increase in permanent wound cavity, I'd rather carry the 9 for the smaller package and higher mag capacity.

BLASPHEMY!!!  You chose a 9mm but never even mentioned a .45!!  You don't know shit!!

My first impression was that the 29 was an amazing bit of power for something that can be covered by your hand. Recoil was hefty, but manageable (with, IIRC, Georgia Arms ammo, and a few miscellaneous loads my friend had). One guy who tried it said his wrist was hurting like hell after a mag load, and the slide nipped him. He corrected his grip and didn't have nearly so much problem after that. It is a little gun with a lot of pop, so just get a good grip on it before you squeeze the trigger. With a little practice, you can rip off rapid fire as well as with any other handgun.

The biggest issue I had with it was the size of the grip. I am of average size and it seemed a bit full in my hand. I would like to feel one of the reduced grips to compare. The feeling wasn't bad enough that -- if it was me -- I would spend the money to get the reduced grip without trying it first.

If you want a real shooting challenge, go hunt rabbits with a G29.

For the life of me I cannot understand these comments about recoil. IMHO, the 10mm while stout is not bad at all. I jumped on the bandwagon when they first came out in earnest in the mid eighties. I still have a Colt Delta Elite which provides the best of many worlds. It's the proven 1911 platform with the option to load it at the 40 SW level or dam near a 41 mag level.

Reloading for those inclined is extremely easy and there are plenty of good propellants for all needs. I personaly prefer Accurate 5,7 and 9.

10mm is perhaps one of the most versitile rounds out there.

It can be loaded with those plated TMJ bullets at or below 40S&W levels for plinking, or you can buy a "doubletap" loading that gets up there around a full house .41 magnum loading.

The 29 is too small for me.

But I shot a friend's 20 as well, and the EA offering.   Recoil with the full house stuff is stout, but I found myself able to bet 2 shots to center mass and one to the noggin on a standard size profile target about 90% of the time rapid fire.  (With the 29 I flinched more, admittedly, and missed the head shots sometimes).

ETA:   I've decided I really want a Dan Wesson Razorback on the near future -- talk about a sweet gun.

The 10mm is a spectacular round. I carry a  GLOCK 9mm, and have no real use for .40 or .45, but I would be all over a 10mm. The GLOCK 10mm are the most durable, most popular, and have the least felt recoil, but the frame is too big for my hands. I had a Smith 1006, but it had the ergonomics and weight of a brick. I don't care for slide mounted safety/decockers either. If GLOCK made a single stack 9+1 10mm, I would buy one today.

The Winchester 175 grain Silvertip is the hottest commonly available load for the 10mm. I wish Speer would make a Gold Dot with the same ballistics.

It's probably because I wonder what would happen if it was used against a 2 legged varment.

Yes the 10mm is a cartrage that many companies don't bother with but it is a cartrage that is very addictive and might have a strong comeback from the FBI fiasco.
Double Tap is doing fine and one of their top sellers is the 10mm cartrage, not to mention it was one of their first sellers.

Though I don't have any firearms I want the 10mm to be my first hand gun.

My apologies.
Will you offer a link to the site so that I may see the power of the 10mm in action.

It used to be on the Blackwater site and the Lemasltd.com site but both of them seem to have taken it down. I can't seem to find it again in Google. It was pretty spectacular, with interesting results. It went like this:

Regular bullet - ten pound roast moved a bit on the table and it left a respectable hole.

RBCD with a cold roast -- same basic results as the regular bullet. Worse wound, but comparable.

RBCD with a roast at about body temperature -- ten pounds of instant red fog. The largest piece left looked to be no more than about four ounces, and it was laying on the ground behind the target table. It looked about the same as you would expect from a small hand grenade.

ETA: The stuff is available through http://www.rbcd.net  It costs about three bucks a round.

There are a few videos on the net of a 10MM RBCD round hitting a ten-pound roast.

When a 10lb roast attacks me, I'll be all over those "magic bullets".

Here's some good info on the various hotrod cartridges that are out there for 1911's and other autos. The 400 Corbon is probably the most useful if you want to duplicate a 10mm out of your 45 auto. Operates at +P 45 ACP pressures. Wont beat your gun apart like some of the more exotic ones. www.handgunsmag.com/ammunition/1911_hot_rods/index.html

Seems to me like it might have the effect of instantly removing a ten pound roast from anyone who was attacking you.  That might slow them down, just from all the blood and hamburger in their face. Two shots removes twenty pounds, and so forth. By the time you emptied the mag you could turn him in for recycling at Burger King.

I also recall a story about a guy who stopped a charging 375-pound wild boar with a single shot from a 9MM in RBCD.

I'll stick to more conventional ballistic theory.  Thanks though.
