Open to suggestions.  I am leaning towards a rifle, b/c of MD's gay-ass handgun laws.

Kind of too late for handguns, with the SB211 crap already causing chaos.

Savage .308 Tactical rifle

Few cases of ammo

LEGP (add $200)

LBE/LBV gear

MREs & freezedried foods

Katadyn water filter

Do you have ONLY $500 to spend or have $500 towards the purchase of a rifle or handgun?
Why are MDs handgun laws so bad? Because sales are recorded to the police? One firearm purchase per 30 days? At least the state of Maryland allows a permit to carry.
Try living in Illinois and decide what to buy. Must be approved by the state of IL and obtain a Firearm Owners Identification(FOID) card. 24 hr waiting period for long guns, 72 hr wait for handgun purchases. NO PERMIT TO CARRY WHATSOEVER. Residents who live in the city of Chicago must register. Hardly any public outdoor rifle ranges. Most ranges available are 25 yard indoor pistol.
Heck, I'd wait for a 7 day wait for a handgun if I could have a permit to carry in IL.
If you want a handgun, get the handgun.

Maryland DOESN"T allow carry permits.

Other than my brother inlaw the cop, I've only met 1 person with a Maryland permit, and only because he's had it for 13 years and runs a SnapOn tool truck.

Maryland having CCW permits is essentially a myth.  You have to be politically connected to get one, and they are very restricted on when and where you can carry.

We have a waiting period.  The State Police keep a registery.  New guns have to have fired shell cases supplied to the State Police.  We have a Board that has to approve guns for sale in the state.  Starting Oct 1st, we have to take an approved 2 hour safety course, but the State Police refuse to setup the courses.  I could go on and on.  Safe storage laws....etc...

Sorry if I was ignorant of the politics towards getting a carry permit, though the Maryland state firearm laws says that carry is allowed with a permit. I guess there is alot of fine print.
 I know... it sucks!!

Are you serious? I thought a M-1 Garand would cost a heck of alot more. I have to look in to that. I have to take a trip to Camp Perry one of these days to check out the competitions.

An exceptionally astute and wise suggestion.
Also, plan to move to a different state.
Have fun shopping for both!
